Supplements for Anxiety Relief?
« on: March 14, 2011, 05:17:24 PM »
Has anyone found any relief from anxiety treatments that use supplements like L-Tyrosine and GABA? I'm desperate for SOMETHING to help me.

Haven't tried those, but I know I feel better when I make sure to get enough B vitamins.  I get mine in a multivitamin, and it makes a real difference in how much energy I have and how well my brain works, both of which are connected to my anxiety/depression.

Not from supplements....I juice (not as much as I should)......but I find that when I eat or juice celery, my "nerves" feel better.

I cannot say whether or not it works, but I have done a great deal of research on 5-HTP, a precursor for seretonin.  Seretonin is speculated to be the neurotransmitter in the brain that people with OCD and depression lack.  I have read numerous positive reviews from people who use the product.  I am currently tapering off Cipralex with the permission of my GP and will be starting to take this over the counter supplement afterwards.  I have also read that taking Vitamin B6 with 5-HTP will help with the absorbtion of it.  I am not someone trying to promote this supplement, simply someone trying to help out another like me.

YES.  Gaba Calm might be the best thing I have tried so far.  The sublingual tablets work pretty quickly and I do notice some calm, it's not a Xanax, but it helps me get by without one.  I bought some Tyrosine also but I haven't noticed anything with it really. Think I'm going to take one right now again to see.  I also have had some success with Theanine Serene.  (L-Theanine).   Hops and chamomile are mild but work for relaxing at night.  I would try the Gaba Calm first, I really like it.  I try to be very critical when I am trying things out and to be aware of placebo, and I don't feel Gaba has been placebo at all; it's been consistent.

I think maybe I downplayed it's effects for me: I would say more than 'some' calm.  It was pretty dramatic for me last night going from anxious and tense to totally chilled.  I like it.

Thank you guys so much for all the replies. I've been taking GABA for about a week now, and I do notice a big difference in my anxiety levels. However, I did skip a day and of course, I noticed a major increase in my anxiety, so I'm thinking that maybe it is helping me a lot. I've been on Tyrosine before and it did help as well as 5-HTP. I'm not sure why, I guess I'm horrible with taking pills consistently, but I stopped, and I felt my depression and anxiety come back full force. I definitely want to try the 5-HTP again with the B vitamins.

Thank you all again, and please let me know if you guys have any updates on how these are working for you. I really want to see how these affects us in the long term and see if maybe they're an alternative to anti-depressants (which for some reason seem to make my depression worse).

Gingko biloba helps me.
I also take Vitamin D (because I get very little sun and your body makes Vitamin D with the help of the sun).  That is supposed to help.
I take omega-3 because it is good for your brain and I don't eat any fish.  I do eat some flax seed but I forget too often.
B vitamins are good for anxiety and stress.

I think I might want to try the Gaba Calm.  Do you know if it can be taken with Lexapro?
