Anyone with R.L.S?
« on: March 11, 2011, 09:56:52 AM »
Does anyone who suffers with anxiety or panic disorder also suffer from RLS (restless leg syndrome)? I just am wondering if there is any evidence that they are somehow related.

Thanks, Steve

I do and I'm not positive if they're related (although it wouldn't surprise me if it were comorbid). My mother also has RLS, though, and I have heard that they think it could be hereditary (but then, so is anxiety and depression).

I too have RLS. My legs always feel jumpy, they twitch alot, and i have the urge to snap my ankles sometimes because they get so damn tight! My neurologist gave me klonopin...it helps a little bit i guess.

But the symptoms cause me to have anxiety, like the twitching and stuff.

My neuro also said that just because its called restless LEG syndrome...it can affect the whole body. Which would explain the jumpy and twitchy muscles all over??! i dont' know,,, anxiety sux lol

Regarding you RLS - have you had a full iron panel done - this needs to include iron binding not just serum. This is a significant cause on RLS especially in women.

If that is OK many neurologists treat RLS with codeine - much better than a benzo

I had R.L.S. well before I had significant anxiety symptoms. I have noticed though that since the anxiety started the R.L.S. has gotten worse. I find it very annoying when I am trying to sleep and my legs constantly feel the urge to move. Sometimes I feel it in my arms as well.

Yes, I've had full iron panel. I have blood work done at the very least every six months due to my gastric bypass surgery that I had in 2007. All my blood work is normal. My RLS only happens occasionally, and I just use a bit of my Klonopin (Chlonazepam) to treat it enough to sleep. My husband calls it "The Jimmy Legs."

Mine feels less like twitching and more like a physical compulsion to move my legs, sort of like when you are uncomfortable in bed and continue to shift to find a comfortable spot. It's really occasional for me though, like once a month or so if that.

P.S. -- Actually, I don't know what "serum" vs. binding means. They tell me I've had full blood work and I'm not anemic. My mom has had some issues with her iron, though, and I do know her RLS is worse than mine, but it seems to have significantly gotten worse with aging for her. She is a nurse practitioner in women's health and takes Chlonazepam for her own RLS, but I also know she's had to do some iron supplements, too. She watches me fairly carefully when it comes to blood work and such.

i get it sometimes, but its pretty rare.  it is very annoying.  at that point there's no way you can sleep so you might as well just get up for a bit, maybe try to walk around or something.

clonazepam has helped sometimes.
