Fear of failure and the fear of passing out
« on: March 05, 2011, 10:09:12 AM »
Does anyone else have these same fears? What do you do to cope?

I've learned to cope with my anxiety, whenever I start to get the onset of an attack, I can always talk it down knowing that's it's just anxiety. That is...unless I'm in a situation I've seen someone pass out before. Then I can't really talk it down until I'm out of that sitution, or been in that situation before. It really affects things sometimes since I'm a Marine. Formations are dreadful since I've seen people pass out in them, as is getting blood drawn or something like that.

And failure. I have horrible fears of failing. Sometimes I won't even start stuff out of fear of failure. I doubt myself so much it's not even funny. Taking tests are the worse. Idk how many tests I've had to get up and walk to the bathroom just to splash some water in my face and talk myself down in front of the mirror because I was having an attack. I've fallen victim to not doing somethings in my life that I could have been really good at or things that I've dreamed of because I was afraid I wouldn't make it.

I have a fear of fainting and since I have fainted before (5 times) it makes my panic all the more intense. 4 years ago I almost fainted in Disney world and after that experience I had panic attacks whenever I felt any symptom close to resembling fainting (usually in stores, church or places with lots of people). I went on zoloft to settle the panic and in the meanwhile went to an ENT because of dizzy spells, etc... He said I had an inner ear thing that was causing my panic and dizziness and it would resolve in a few months. It did, I weaned off zoloft and I've felt great for 4 years. In dec. I fainted due to a stomach virus- and while logically I know that this was due to illness and dehydration, for some reason it turns mental and I started to have PAs again. So now I'm  frustrated and back on zoloft.  I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go to a therapist so that I can get over this fear of fainting since that is the root of my issues.
Are you taking any medications for your fears? Have you seen a therapist? I hear that cognitive behavior therapy works wonders for these things.
Good luck to you

Most of any task is done in just starting it and most of the time spent on it makes a marginal improvement. You get a B in life for showing up. So don't worry about it, just start it.
