Hello everyone...SO needs help
« on: March 04, 2011, 04:11:56 PM »
Hi all,
My name is Emma and I am here hoping to get advice to better help my husband. So here is a brief synopsis: He suffers from hypochondria/OCD and it is only fueled by the fact that he DOES have health issues. He suffers from GERD, is overweight, and smokes. The anxiety means he can't lose weight because losing weight means something is wrong, the smoking aggravates the GERD which would lessen if he could lose about 40lbs- according to all the DR.'s he's seen-, and all the while he can't quit smoking because it helps the anxiety. It's a vicious cycle that only intensifies in the winter for whatever reason. During the summer months it isn't so bad.  He won't take medication, exercise, or eat right either, it's almost like he WANTS to suffer. Meanwhile, I work 2 jobs (partly as a means of escape and partly because of the medical bills.), have CFS/Fibro, and depression and just can't seem to be as supportive as I used to be. I used to spend hours talking him down, and now I just snap. I feel useless and incapable of helping him through the attacks and am therefore desperate for some advice on what helps others manage. I may not understand it, but I am trying to be understanding and caring. Any suggestions? What can I say that is helpful without being a know-it-all?

Hello Emma

I commend your courage to come here and seek help for your husbands conditions!   Your husband has to make the first step in getting help!  As for any disease or disorders one has to be open in seeking help!  I would suggest a good therapist if he is open to it!  The both of you could use some good counseling at this time!  These things that your husband has can be helped!  He has to want to change!  Some people hang on to their disorders for secondary gains!  I dont have all the answers but keep posting here and you will find many people here who have similar issues and someone might be able to give you some better insight to your questions!  Welcome to the Zone!

Thanks guys. Pauly, he did CBT as a teen but we simply can't afford it right now otherwise we would go in a heartbeat! He just told me today that he is trying to quit smoking again though, which is awesome! So maybe this time it'll stick.

That's awesome Emma!  Your husband trying to quit smoking is a step forward in his healing process!  It says that he wants to get better!  Just be his biggest supporter!  After reading your post for a second time, I see a lot of similarities in my relationship with my wife!  She worked 2 jobs for exactly the same reasons as you!  She suffers from some depression as well and also was not supportive as once before because of it!  That was then!  Only a couple of months ago!  Thanks to the help of medication, therapy, some lifestyle changes, and Anxiety Zone,  I am in a much better place!  I am working again, and I am close to feeling normal as I will ever be!  Just to show you how much things can change, in a matter of months I would like to share my story with you!
