I have a strange phobia too..
« on: April 12, 2007, 07:52:59 PM »
Does anyone else have a fear of skeletons? I've never heard of anyone else with this problem. I'm pretty sure I know how I acquired it. When I was 8, I was on vacation in Newfoundland, going out to many small islands. There was one island with a long-abandoned fishing village. When exploring it, I stumbled across the skeleton of a child poking out of the ground. By the way, Newfoundland has NO dirt. All rocks) Even though I know logically there's nothing to be afraid of, I even know WHY I have the fear, I can't escape it! I can't look at anything even resembling a skeleton without feeling sick and dizzy. I couldn't go into the science room until they removed the model skeleton. I can't even look at pirate flags! I hate halloween because of all the skeleton decorations that go up. I feel ridiculous because I'm scared of such a stupid thing...

Dont feel stupid all sorts of things are feared as phobias, I mentioned on another post there is an actual listing in the DSM of a specific phobia against balloons and clowns although I have to say I am not too keen on clowns myself after reading the Stephen King book 'IT' LOL

You have already identified where the phobia started and for an 8 year old that was a pretty traumatic thing to find it would be for a maure thinking adult I certainly would be scared finding that.

I suppose the only way to get over it i8s to try and expose yourself bit by bit like you mentioned on another post about buying your lunch had helped your overcome a fear of buying something at a shop counter although I appreciate that wasnt actually a phobia.

Actually lets face it skeletons are horrible looking things which give me the creeps.  But the one consolation is hopefully you dont encounter seeing too many of them in your day to day activities LOL of course unless its halloween!"!

LOL... you'd be surprised how often skeletons do pop up in day-to-day life! Pictures of skeletons are EVERYWHERE, as logos, on t-shirts, science posters, etc. In one class I was stuck sitting behind a guy with a HUGE, horrible picture of a skeleton on the back of his sweater. Heavy metal band or something. I couldn't concentrate in that class very well... he wore that darned sweater EVERY DAY. I finally asked to be moved to a different seat.

HAHA LOL I guess they can be spotted when you have a phobia about them, no wonder you spot them everywhere.  At least by talking about it on here it might be a positive step to overcoming it all.
