mentally numb.
« on: March 02, 2011, 05:51:08 PM »
im not sure if its from my anxiety or my depression but i feel indifferent to everything. i know some people say that with anxiety comes increased emotions like crying all the time, but i literally cant cry, ive tried. just wondering if anyone else has the same feeling. not to sound selfish but i have lots of reasons to cry and be sad at the moment but i just cant. i dont care about anything and  dont really have any desires at all. its odd.

Hey,
Welcome.  If you have reasons to be sad just now, but are feeling numb instead of anxious or sad, it could be a kind of shock.

I am agoraphobic w/ panic.  The mental numbness strikes me at times, to keep things interesting.  I am no medical expert, but in my case it comes when I am too overwhelmed or worn out to react.  It cycles through when in high stress situations.

You don't mention if you are being seen by a doctor, taking medications, working through things with a therapist.

good point. im currently on wellbutrin for the last month and klonopin. i dont take the klonopin because its an as needed basis and i havent had a panic attack in awhile. im looking into therapists but have not gone to see one.

the shock thing could be true. the numbness has been for a year, and that does coincide with lots of stressers.

my only thing is, my anxiety started a little over a year ago, and the just recently i found out my mom is not doing well with cancer, but it hasnt gotten any worse just the same numbness and apathy.

Hi yemi

Sounds more like depression to me!  Depression tends to sometimes make you feel numb!  That feeling that you get is as you have no interest in things anymore!  Things you once enjoyed seems unimportant and not as enjoyable!  Other symptoms of depression is loss or gain of appetite and sleep disruptions!  If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you are more than likely experiencing depression!

I'm the same way! I think it's our way of coping with the anxiety and depression. Like our bodies just kinda shut down so that we can't feel anything besides the emptiness that consumes us. If that made any sense at all. Haha I'm really tired. But yeah there are days when I feel so sad but can't cry, no matter how hard I try..it's like anxiety and depression (which can and often does disguise itself as apathy) become the only emotions you can feel. They consume you.
