abnormal pap smear in my forties....upset.
« on: March 02, 2011, 01:42:22 PM »
I am in my forties and had and abnormal pap smear and HPV last year and this year again.  After last year I had a coloposcopy and since it was just ASCUS they called me back in 6 months....normal in August, but now its LSIL which is a step up and a kind of dysplasia.  I went back for another coloposcopy and he did a ECC which is scraping the cervical canal high up to see if there is anything"worse" up there.  Said he saw a mild dysplasia  on one little part of my visible cervix but overall, not a big deal.  Now I am worried about cancer being up in my cervix that might have been brewing for a while...I asked him, on a scale of 1 to 10 how worried should I be?  He said "1.5. "  I think he thought I was crazy, now I dread the 3-4 days waiting to hear what's wrong.  I googled cervical cancer (big mistake) but though I know Pap smears nip precancers on the cervix in the bud, how about the part of the cervix they can't see??  How common is this situation I'm in?  I feel very upset right now.  ANyone have any experience with an ECC?  He said it was just a precaution, but I feel like he is going to find something bad.

(((hugs)))drs suck sometimes, they arent always as nice as htey should be.
I had abnormal paps due to HPV, same as you. I had hte LEEP procedure done adn was told by my dr. ( each time i had an abnormal) that they usually clear themselves up in time. I was confused but its true-they do clear themselves up in time. Nothing to worry about:) I 've been there :)

Wrdsilly, I know exactly how are you are feeling.  5 years ago I had my first abnormal pap and it was LSIL.  They told me it was probably due to HPV but did the whole colposcopy thing too.  I had never had an abnormal pap in my life and had been dating/married to my husband for 10 years.  The doctors told me times of stress can make it come about (which I was having a lot of stress).  Anyway, that was my first experience with something medically scary and what sent me into a panic attack and HA.  I still haven't gotten over it 5 year later because here I am on this message board worried constantly now.  Looking back, the HPV scare, I totally blew it out of proportion.  I should have listened to my doctors when they said there wasn't cancer....and you should too.  Doctors see cervixes every day all day long.  They know what they are talking about!!!  Rest easy...which I know is easier said that done (I'm in the middle of a major health panic now about something else....wish I could take my own advice)

Warning: possible TMI

I was just diagnosed with high risk HPV in December and I am freaking out about the possibility of cervical and anal cancer. Since being diagnosed I've begun developing all kinds of symptoms. Warts being the obvious one, but I also have pain in my groin and blood in my stool. I go for another pap this wknd and i'm so scared that it might come back abnormal. Can any of you women tell me how long your "positive" hpv result lasted (I've heard that it comes up as negative when the virus is not active)... also how long did it take for your warts to go away? I've been used 2 rounds of aldara but they arent going away  :(

hi jersey ( im fr jersey 2 lol) i had the warts too but i cant remember how long it took for them to go away, i do remember the dr. used some kind of acid in the office ( sounds worse than it was) i also remember them telling me to come back in 3-6 months for another pap check and the results were always better then. I went thru this a few times-having bad paps due to hpv and the paps always cleared up in a few months time. BTW my dr. doesnt do anal paps, which i think should be done for those of us with hpv...

I'm 42 and in March 2009 I had my first abnormal pap.  It showed LSIL and possible HSIL.  I had a colposcopy done with several biopsies taken and an ECC.  All negative, except one small spot of mild dysplasia on the outer cervix.  I went back 3 months later and all was normal.  Also, last year's pap was normal.  I tested negative for HPV on all paps, plus the biopsies.  So, still not too sure what happened.  Anyway, I was terrified!  Now, after doing hours and hours of research I see how common abnormal paps are.  I wouldn't worry about the glandular cells because if there are any severely abnormal cells the dr can do a cone biopsy to remove them.  I definitely can relate with how you feel though.  I go back for my yearly pap soon and have been trying not to get worked up about it. :(
