Tips for staying motivated through recovery
« on: January 23, 2011, 12:15:36 PM »
I am on the mend from my latest bout of panic attacks, and this is the first time that depresson has been a part of them.  With the help of meds i am slowly feeling better and having good days here and there - but the sadness remains under that facade often and I lack the motivation to keep getting inspired to push forward.

Does anyone have any mantras or advice for keeping momentum up and dealing with the set backs (feeling like a yoyo up and down)? I'm not good at being patient with myself, so thats the toughest part...

Thanks in advance....

Hi Daisy ;D

My best advice is to make goals of things you want to achieve and how you will reasonably stick with them. The trick is to start slow and work your way up, as my own mantra is "small steps lead to big progress over time." Don't overload yourself or you'll just get frustrated and give up.

As for being patient with yourself and dealing with the set-backs, be realistic with yourself. It's all about acceptance. Set backs WILL happen no matter what you do - it's just a part of life. It's how you deal with them that reflects how you will succeed or fail. Start practicing positive self-talk when this happens - encourage yourself to keep going and that tomorrow is a new day. Also, give yourself rewards for a job well done, like a hot bath, or funny movie, or coffee with a good friend....Positivity is one of the keys to success :happy0151:

I hope this helps and that you can find something that works for you, both in good times and bad.

Lanie seems to be on the ball. I think having short realisable goals is the way to go. Certainly have a long term plan but break it down into manageable pieces. I think it is probably also easier to be motivated for things we are genuinely interested in. If there are any projects you have been dying to start but have been putting off try to start them if possible.

Thanks friends,  it's been a roller coaster of a last week but I'd say there have been more good days than bad so I think that's progress... I just have to keep telling myself that it's going to take time, I am NOT patient with myself, ever.  :angel-smiley-006:

Similar to what Lanie said, one thing that has helped me (From Dr Burns book not my idea) is to make a Daily Activity schedule.

Even if it just includes simple things like getting dressed, reading a book, and eating it can be really help keep your mind busy and make you feel worthwhile. Try it for a day!!

It's my life
And it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
Its my life
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life
