high anxiety while driving
« on: January 22, 2011, 08:32:18 AM »
hi,
ive had my P's for about 5-6 months now. If im driving somewhere that ive driven to a billion times before, im ok, and i deal with driving pretty well. I'd even say i'm a reasonably GOOD driver! But if i dont really know where im going (and im TERRIBLE with directions) i freak out and get so upset that i have to pull over. Today was the worst time driving that ive had yet... I was SO STUPID and i feel so scared to even get in my car again! I was anxious and panicy, and i just pulled out from somewhere cutting off 2 cars on both sides of the road and i only JUST missed them... i just started to panic and all i could think about was getting over to the other side and COMPLETLY lost my sences!! i was so embarressed and felt like such an IDIOT! ive never been so careless before. now for the rest of the arvo and night, all i can think about is how i only JUST avoided what would have been a pretty bad accident...
has anyone else experienced anixety/panic while driving?? and what can i do to get over it?! i never want to put myself or other people in that position again..
with my driving, i always feel like im taking 1 step forward, 10 steps back!!  If i get somewhere on my own and ive driven well, my confidence goes up a little. but when i skrew up, it plummets right down again... right now, i dont feel like ever driving again. And i feel like im NEVER going to have real independance since i always need help with driving somehow!

What always helped me was water. Take long sips of it when you feel a panic attack coming. It helps. I got over it, and I enjoy driving again.

Losing anxiety is like losing weight: It comes off very slowly and at a steady pace with a LOT of hard work, however if you start overeating again (Worrying in our case) it comes back full blown in a week or two.

Although now im feeling anxious just sitting around the house... like its left over from driving or something... i hope it passes soon!...
