"perceived weakness" in arms/wrists (ALS fear)
« on: January 15, 2011, 11:33:31 AM »
I feel this tension sometimes in the back of my arms. I feel shakey when I go to open up a bottled water. Like its harder than it used to be.

Is this muscle weakness? I made a BIG MISTAKE the other day and read some things on an ALS website. Dont' do that if you have ALS fear.  :angry-smiley-034:

Carpal tunnel? Anxiety?

i know how u feel. the BIGGEST mistake i made was googling twitching and weakness and boom ...now i have full fear and obsession of als. i have what i thought was weakness, i noticed it harder to open things, tightness in my legs walkin up stairs, etc.

plus i twitch all over my body, big and little twitches, constant all over, all day. i was sooo scared that i went to my neuro 3 times now over the last 2 1/2 months! she said perceived weakness and clinical weakness are 2 different things, and if i had true weakness due to als, she would spot it just in my physical exam alone. hope that helps you.

i mean, it doesnt really help me lol but eases my anxiety a little bit i guess lol

"perceived weakness" doesnt actually mean weak does it?

ALS causes REAL weakness--things others see.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

I am currently fighting the urge to look up ALS symptoms because I'm sure I will immediately think I have it.  I have been having a weak feeling in my forearms and some of my fingers have been trembling and it's freaking me out.  That and this nagging cough that I've had for a couple of months.  I really really want to see a doctor but I am petrified of finding anything out.

Don't look up the als symptoms and stuff!  :angry-smiley-034: trust me, when i started getting body wide twitching and what i thought was weakness i went right to google, and now im stuck in a world of fear. also, ive had a dry cough now for 3 weeks, and horrible sinus and ear issues so i know what your feeling. feel better!  :action-smiley-065:

How are you guys doing with the arm and hand weakness? I have been experiencing this and was really wondering if I can expect this to get better at some point.

I have that same problem.  My neck and shoulders get veryVERY tense.  I think in part it might have to do with whiplash I had 20 years ago but I just don't know.  Anyway, when those muscles are very tense, I get the horrible tension in the back of my arms and then my hands shake a little.  Scary.

i don't worry about weakness as much anymore, only because i still work out, lift my 12 lb baby up and down all day and walk alot.... sooo if i was truley weak i wouldnt be able to do all of that. But what I do worry about is the twitching sometimes. I KNOW that weakness comes before twitching ,,,but i still worry...also i wonder if my speech is slurry sometimes.. bla bla it never ends haha

but the "weakness" that I usually feel comes and goes...and migrates around my body...from a hand...to a foot...to a leg...etc, etc. and ALS doesnt' work like that.
