Recently diagnosed and looking for support
« on: December 29, 2010, 12:38:31 AM »
Hey guys! I get soooooo worried after every time I've been out drinking alcohol with my friends or family. Recently I got quite drunk and have been punishing myself non stop at what an idiot I probably was. Getting so sick of catastrophising every little thing I do. I'm now seeing a psychiatrist and am on medication which helps a bit but not much. Any advice?

I am a "catastrophizer" too. My psychologist has done Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with me. I have to learn to let go of thoughts that are not productive. It is hard but it does work. Good luck and welcome :)

Thanks junglejulia! It's exhausting having our condition isn't it? Aaaaaah! Have a wedding to go to tomorrow. Hopefully I manage to wake up the morning after without stressing my arse off for the next few days worrying. At least I have a hot dress to wear.

I can completely relate to what you're going through. I know it's hard but at the end of the day, you need to forgive yourself. The past is in the past and there is no possible way to change it. I know that's a scary thought, but it's one of the best ways to get better :)

I have been on meds for a year now and while they seemed to work pretty well at first, they aren't working like they used to anymore. I am pretty scared by it, but I know that all I have to do (and you can too) is talk to my doctor and tell her how I'm feeling. There are so many meds out there and so many things our docs can do for us. Try not to be scared and if you can, start going to therapy or something (as I am about to go back to) because it's always great to have someone to talk to who can help you through the hard times.

And always keep in mind, this site is always here. It has changed my life, and I hope it changes yours too! :)
