Addiction worries
« on: March 16, 2007, 09:42:42 AM »
i posted in the GAD section about my issues with my bf and his anxiety/depression and how its effecting my health and my anxiety/stress.

lately its been so bad that i'm not motivated to get anything done at work and when i go home i don't want to talk to anyone...i snap on the smallest things...i'm barely sleeping, eating and can't get motivated with my volleyball which is something I normally LOVE To do.

I'm afraid to go see my dr because i don't want him to prescribe me any medications.  i have heard such bad things about meds plus i'm thinking everything is just related because of the stress i have with my bf and him not letting me help him.

is there any herbal meds i can get at a health food store?? i'm so stressed out taht i'm causing myself to have a fever and nausia and my back hurts and my neck hurts....I just don't want to become dependant...

Viatamin B complex and  vitamim D, for your mood...try melatonin, from your health food store, it helps your body create more melatonin to aid in sleep.

You know, I have kinda got good things to say about both self help and medication.  I think there is a place for both.  I really don't see anyone getting really better with only one or the other.  Most find a much better quality of life through a combination of lifestyle changes and medication.  Personally I fully endorse some self help techniques:

Eating well
No alcohol
No caffeine
No nicotine
Exercise
Meditation
CBT
Herbal remedies such as Valerian, Kava, and Chamomile for anxiety and Melatonin for sleep
Plus medication if needed, but be very careful with the last one.

It is difficult to find the correct meds and most of the time the medication creates more side effects than it's worth, so tread carefully and I advize anyone starting meds to keep a daily journal of how you feel.  Never take more than one or two meds at the same time because then you don't know how you are reacting to either one.  For me, Xanax was the answer.  It has made my life so much better in combo with ALL of the above techniques my life is at about 90% right now and that, to me, is amazing.

Good luck in your personal journey,
OE

There is a general reason why the majority of the things you hear about meds is bad because:

If someone is taking a med, and has a bad experience, they are much more motivated to speak out about that med.

Usually if someone takes a med and its succesful for them, its just left at that.

Medication for some people saves lives and is the reason why some people are here today. For the vast majority of my life I took after my father and thought medication/therapy was a bunch of crock. Then I saw it change my dads/moms life, heard so many great stories and felt it change mine.

Don't be afraid of medication, if it's needed it's needed. If you have a chemicle imbalance, fix it. If your arm is broken, get a cast.
