Anyone one tried 5-htp supplement?
« on: November 26, 2010, 04:37:07 PM »
Well I would love to find something that can give me a hand with my anxiety and I came across 5-htp that is a supplement that is a naturally-occurring amino acid which does the following

The full name of 5 HTP is 5-Hydroxytryptophan, which is a natural compound that our bodies make from the amino acid, tryptophan. The main use for 5-HTP is in the brain, where it is converted to serotonin, which acts as a brain chemical mesenger.

Im addiment to not go on anti-depressants, but just wondering if anyone has tried these to help bring some relief.

Seem to be able to buy them at Holland and Barrets as well as many other places and prices are not too bad. If rather try a supplement then an anit-depressant I think and if all fails then try something else.

5-htp has been helpful to me in conjunction with fish-oil, magnesium, and taurine.
I find that I do not have to take 5-htp everyday, but a few times a week is enough.
I can also tell if I have too much, because there is a very distinct headache that comes after taking it straight for a few days or multiple times a day for a few days. 50mg is enough to help me but this is different for everyone. And, if I don't have enough I know that if I'm particularly tearful or anxious, and I take it, usually I feel a big difference the next day.

During a flare of the anxiety issues and related depression in the past I was on celexa ~20 mg and tried 50mg once... I wouldn't recommend doing SSRIs and 5-htp together unless discussing it with whoever is prescribing the anti-anxiety meds.

You will need adequate B6 to utilize 5-HTP effectively. If you're taking any other meds, or if you have any questions, talk with a health care provider.
