If you want to get sucked into whole new world and be inspired by the themes and ideas that are brought up:
Gregory Maguire's Wicked, Son of a Witch, and a Lion Among Men trilogy

I love to read! I cut off my cable in 2009 and started reading a lot more. I read that the average person watches TV 3 or more hours a day, that's the time I dedicate to reading! I like to read all kinds of material and I like to learn, so about 6 months ago I invested in a speed reading book and it really helped me triple my reading speed & maintain comprehension. I read about a book a day on the days that I have the freedom to read.

Aside from reading the daily NY Times and WSJ and weekly Economist, I am mostly interested in general fiction or historical fiction and biographies/memoirs and non-fiction books. My goal this year is to read 105 books (50% more than I read last year). My favorites for this month so far are: New Yorker Stories by Ann Beattie, The Help by Kathryn Stocket, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, The Rizzole & Isles Series by Tess Gerritsen (I read the series in a week, and I think the first few books were stronger than the others), Just Kids by Patti Smith, The Imperfectionists, More Money Than God, WAR, A Visit from the Goon Squad (forgot who wrote it, but it's SO GOOD), The Obama Wars by Bob Woodward, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Stacks (OK but not that great, to be honest), and The Room. As you can probably tell I spend the first part of my year reading books on "the best of" lists from the previous year.  :happy0151:

This week on my list of books to read is: Elizabeth Street by Laurie Fabiano, 20 Under 40: short stories from The New Yorker, Parrot and Olivier in America, Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, and Nothing to Envy : Ordinary Lives in North Korea, and Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, I think I'm the last person ever to read it.
