Has anoyone weaned off of metoprolol or any beta-blocker??
« on: November 02, 2010, 09:54:10 PM »
Cardiologist is weaning me off metoprolol because it is making me extremely fatigued. Im on 100mg (50mg twice a day) short acting metoprolol. Ive heard of so many bad stories about bad things happening when stopping a beta-blocker. I'm scared! Just wondering if anyone else has weaned themselves off a beta-blocker and how they went about it..

A few years back I stopped taking my beta abruptly. I had just lost a lot of weight and noticed my blood pressure was okay with or without the pill, so I just stopped taking it (didn't realize what I was doing back then). As far as I'm aware though I'm doing just fine. That's been around 3 years ago, and I'm not dead yet. I'm back on beta blockers again though (also metoprolol).

But you should have no reason worry. You've got your cardiologists supervision, so I'm sure you're in good hands.

My wife who is a pharmacist said you should be fine as they are weaning you off of it. She said it
is typically not a good idea to stop taking them suddenly however, especially if you are older or
have underlying heart issues.

Please wean slowly. I was taking 50 mg. a day (25 morn./25 night) in january and my side effects were crazy so I weaned off (with dr. help). The first month was awful. My anxiety went crazy. I took xanax to help with the panic attacks.  It took about 6 months for all of the side effects I was having with the metoprolol to go away (extremely cold feet, feeling like I could run a marathon upon waking, broncho spasms and anxiety). But I was able to wean off the xanax a month after stopping the metoprolol. It does get better. Just take it slow.   It may be uncomfortable but it is short lasting. Hang in there and you can ask me any questions you have or if you need someone to talk to you can message me anytime.
