Thunder Storms?
« on: March 05, 2007, 08:56:42 PM »
Sounds nuts, especially as a 32 year old woman, but I seem to have panic attacks as I hear, or know that thunder storms are approaching. We even have a nice basement, and a place to go if they get too bad, but I'm so embarrassed by my reactions which I try to hide. I always go start a load of laundry in the basement when we get a bad storm, I try to keep busy down there and I have to use the bathroom because my nerves get so out of control.. my children are old enough now to notice I do this... Anyone else still scared as an adult?

well i am 24 years old and i have my bed on the 2nd floor right under a window. i get myself so freaked out about thunder storms, espeically at night when i try to sleep. my heart starts racing and i get so scared i feel like a child. i am actaully lucky that one of my dogs is terrifed of thunder so he hides in the basement so i pretend i am taking the dog into the basement to calm him down when i am really trying to calm myself down as well!

Thanks for your comment! I know it sounds childish... I wish I could just stop! LOL I'm glad to have a finished basement with a rec room, at least i can pretend to be doing something down there. We once had a dog who was afraid of storms too ( a big doberman!) and I'd sit with her during the storms and pet her. :) Pets can be so comforting! :happy0151:

Scared? I would call it TERRIFIED!

I have a storm phobia as well as rain phobia. If it's even a possibility that it's going to rain or storm, I do not leave my house.
Usually when it storms I put ear plugs in, grab all my personal belongings that can fit in my purse, grab my Bible, make sure my animals are with me, and make a bed in the closet for myself and the animals.

It seems so ridiculous to me. I mean, I understand that it irrational.... but I am still terrified.

I know how you feel!!!
It really is the worst feeling ever!

What's weird is if I am asleep and wake up to it thundering, I am fine.  But sometimes if I am already up and there is a thunderstorm I panic.  And there is no basement or shelter or anything so I especially am nervous when we have tornado warnings.  I always feel like people should be told to drive perpindicular to the path the tornado is coming from that way they miss the entire path of it and they arent outrunning it either, so seems safe to me.  But I have never heard that be recommended, so I don't know... I guess they don't want to get people all out on streets at the same time, because it seems to make sense to me.

I remember some days I woke up with the most UNBELIEVABLE thunderstorms where it sounded like bombs and then crackling through the air and the house shaking.  Really REALLY bad ones.  I can't even begin to describe how loud it was.  I think that was the day that then a tree in the back yard was struck by lightning.  I have been so shocked at how loud storms have been that I almost literally fell out of my bed.  lol

Hii..

I am terribly scared of lightening... I can't stand it... espicailly I am a guy who is scared of lightening... it makes it very embarassing. All my friends are bold or they at least pretend to be bold. I try to make excuses like stomach ache or school work to not to go out on a stormy day. But I know its not good and my friends must have noticed it somehow. I don't know what to do.
