Lexapro and Klonopin - Safe together???
« on: February 27, 2007, 09:30:06 PM »
Hi All,

After months of fighting it, I finally decided to try medication.  The psychiatrist put me on lexapro and also gave me klonopin to take as needed for sleep.  Maybe this is the health anxiety in me, but ever since Daniel Smith (Anna Nicole's son) died with lexapro in his system, I am just really worried to mix it with anything...but I would really like to take the klonopin when I have trouble sleeping.  I KNOW the doctor wouldn't have prescribed this combo to me if it was viewed as being dangerous but I was just wondering what experiences others have had when dealing with these two drugs...especially together.  Of course I am on the smallest dose of each medicine, but I tend to get side effects with everything.

Sorry to ramble....I look forward to any feedback/advice I can get.  Thanks :)

Anna Nicole's son also had zoloft and methadone in his system in addition to the lexapro. I don't really know what methadone is, but since he was taking TWO anti-depressants at the same time i'm sure that had a hand in something going wrong, as that is never recommended.  I wouldn't worry. Tons of people take an anti-anxiety med such as klonopin or xanax with their anti-depressant.

klonopin doesnt seem to help me sleep either, but for some reason lorazepam did even though they are the same class drug and lorazepam not as long-acting.

Since making this post, I am now on day 6 of lexapro.  So far, this has been okay for me.  Aside from a migraine, no serious side effects or anything that I can think of.  I also listened to the feedback from this post and took the klonopin, but didn't really like it.  I'm a pretty small person so I don't know if medicine affects me more, but I felt like I had been given the date rape drug or something.  I was watching tv and all of a sudden I was just totally out of it.  I think I just didn't like feeling like I had so little control over myself.  I have been taking melatonin for sleep aid instead and that has been wonderful.

Thanks everyone for your responses to this post.  I hope the lexapro works.   I am tried of of feeling like a 90 year old.

ps...sorry if I have offended any 90 years olds out there.

Regaurds to Annas son dieng: He had two different SSRIs (Bad) and Methadone (A synthetic Opiod)(Pain killer) so don't worry about that.

Lexapro may or may not be right for you. For some people its life changing. SSRI's and any medication for that matter, react differently to different people.

Klonipin is not a direct sleep aid, but as you noticed it calmed you and that aids In sleeping.

As for melatonin, I have never heard of it causing depression personally. I could be wrong, maybe you heard/know different.

If not, its a great natural and from what I know, safe sleep aid.

Melatonin knocks me out quick.  I have never had any bad experiences with it.  It is pretty natural considering many foods contain melatonin in small amounts, but make sure you get it from a reputable vendor.  You don't want to buy a bad product.  Do some research before you purchase it.  Avoid Wal-Mart brand anything!
