yes you can only private message one person at a time.  It show up in chat as a "whisper", only the sender and receiver can see it.

Popeye, do you mean a pm from the forum? If so, then yes you can only send one pm at a time. However, you can 'whisper' to  more than one member at a time in the chat room.
