Smoking
« on: March 06, 2006, 05:37:17 PM »
I smoke and when I try to quit my anxiety gets out of control.  Even all the different medications I've been on don't control me anxiety without the cigarette.

I have made it one year before without medication, however when I tried quitting smoking I lost all control of my anxiety.  I started smoking again after 6 months, the pain of my muscles being so tense all the time was overwhelming, I was put on medication and it still didn't help.  I'm going to give it one more shot...if the same thing happens... I guess I'll just be a smoker. I don't know what else to do.

I'm too scared of sleeping pills...
I feel too groggy the next day and they are addictive.
I found my Risperdal handles my anxiety and I can sleep and feel refreshed, no sleeping pill ever did that for me.

I don't know what to say to you but maybe someone else has some ideas!

I smoke too.. Usually only one at night now.. Sometimes I am able to go a few days without.. but I always end up stressed again and smoking helps me mellow.. I'd like to quit too.. I keep hoping for the day I will smoke and it will make me sick to my stomach so it will be easier to do so  ;)

I quit and I've detail elseware in this site about how (and I DON'T reccommend it) however I know a lot of people who have depression and anxiety issues that quit by hypnosis. I'd give that a shot if I needed to. By the way, my anxiety dropped six to eight months after I quit.

My grandmother is a chain smoker and has been for about 50 years. She suffers from clinical depression and feels it reduces her anxiety. She is having worse effects though from the smoking. So is it worth it down the line? mmmm I dont know.

ONCE AGAIN, I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS , THERE ARE OBVIOUS RISKS, HOWEVER, IT DID WORK FOR ME.

I had the same thing with smoking. I spent years quiting and could never get beyond the anxiety. It took three years to quit. I ended up using the Oregon quit protocol. It worked for me but I'm NOT recomending it for anyone else because you put yourself at a higher risk initially. First you switch from cigarettes to snuff! It has a much higher amount of nicotine so It definitely handles the cravings. However it is not as socially exceptable so you have to change your nicotine pattrens. After a few months (3 to 12 they say...) you start to slowly mixing your snuff with mint chew (it's a brand you can find at most retailers or you can order it on line) until it's all mint leaves. I've been on pure mint for 9 months and had no withdrawl issues at all. It has a great success rate but it's definitely not recommended by doctors for obvious reasons.
