Hypochondriac in Progress
« on: August 27, 2010, 08:57:59 PM »
Hello World!  My mother suggested I try a chat/forum to meet and talk with people who may have the same issues I have.  It my help to talk to people who understand and know what it feels like.

This is my story in a nutshell!

At 18 I was diagnosed as a manic depressive.  None of the meds worked.  I was always up and down and never had a clear reason why.  Finally at 25 I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.  I have had 7 wonderful years of feeling great with just your usual life worries.  About 8 months ago I had the most hard core panic attack I have ever had.  I went to the hospital because I thought I was having a heart attack (I was a smoker quit in May - thought it would help).

Needless to say since then I've had some pretty severe panic attacks and have now developed a bit of hypochondria.  It's not daily but sometimes when I have a headache, my heart starts to race or I get an upset stomach I truly believe there is something seriously wrong with me and I must be dying.  Most of the times I want to go the ER but the rational side of me keeps that from happening as it's not cheap!  Of course all of this leads to,you guessed it, another panic attack.

It's so frustrating. My doctor has me on new meds that I love (although I hate taking them).  I will have two great weeks and then out of the blue...bam.  Panic attack and fear of dying from some random disease.

If you're reading this I hope you understand because although they want to my parents and friends don't get it.  They always want to know what it feels like, can't you just think it away or just relax.  Hmm, if only!  Well enough about me.  Now to enjoy reading about all of you!!!  :action-smiley-065:

Hi TX

welcome aboard.  I'm glad you found us.  I'm sure you will find it helpful to talk with others with anxiety/depression.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.
