for those with a fear of open water
« on: August 25, 2010, 12:58:22 AM »
I have been a surfer for many years now and anxiety has always played a major role in my life. For me the ocean is a second home. Its a "safe"place. However the fear of open water is scary to many including myself. I've spoken to a few surfers here who have anxiety when surfing. This is for you guys.

To better control the fear I find that knowing my ocean spot is key. Know what your dangers are. From marine life to currents to complete open sea, know your surrounding! The more physically prepared you are the more "safe" you can make yourself. Mentally as well. Knowledge on protection is also key!!! If your having an attack while in the water here are some suggestions

If your in the line up, stay there! Calm yourself down! In many ways you can do this!

If your in the process of trying to get through white water then swim for shore! Make the shoreline your safety net! When having an attack in open waters your brain wants you to get to a safe place. By using this adrenaline to get to your safe place your attack will definitely decrease because your doing what your brain wants. This goes for anyone who isn't a surfer as well. Whether its a lake, a pool, or the ocean. If your a swimmer, skimmer, surfer, or even body boarder. I hope this helps you the way its helped me. Remember, buddy system my friends!
