Afraid to fall asleep.
« on: August 14, 2010, 04:53:48 AM »
Does anyone have somnophobia?
I have always had an issue sleeping...And Im wondering if anyone else has also.
And Im not talking about nightmares...Im talking about the fear that you will die in your sleep.
Sound familiar?

I have had that fear. I just try to tell myself thats all it is is a fear. I also look at it this way, if I die in my sleep that is the best way to go. When I go to bed I always read to relax my mind from anything that I may be worried about. I get sleepy and turn out the lights and I am out. I hope that you can find a way to cope with that fear.

I used to have light somniphobia, however my fear was of the "black phase" of sleep, basically everything outside REM, for the simple reason that I am not in control then. Anyway, for a few nights I set my alarm for every two or three hours, but it went away eventually.
Sleep is not something to fear. Sleep is something that gives you the rest you need.

I have the same fear as you do, many nights i'm up for hours telling talking myself to sleep. I don't have any great ideas for you since i haven't come up with any yet. The problem is the nights the thought doesn't enter my mind I question that to and then I start thinking about it.

when i was very young, a relative told me if i did not go to sleep, the sun would not come up. this put some bad pressure on me for a long time until i was four and the sun came up when i was coloring in the back of the greyhound bus and didn't notice.  i was relieved.
