The way you can tell its anxiety is when your mind is busy and your having fun, they seem to disappear, and the second you have time to think "am i breathing okay?" you feel it. That was what my first anxiety was over, and i swore to doctors something was dire wrong because i CONSTANTLY thought about my breathing and felt i couldn't breathe. Just try to take deep breaths and relax and get your mind on something else when its happening.

Hello..... :action-smiley-065:...Welcome, the same happens to me when you don't
think about it, your fine, but as soon as you give it a thought you have trouble
breathing. I think " Hunniedeww24 ", explained it very well. It is just one of many
symptoms of anxiety....have a good day

Deep breathing will help. Try and get your breathing on track and then try and focus on something very complicated (like a rubix cube) and see if it helps. I play with fidget toys and it seems to help me tremendously

I used to feel the same thing Nemmm, it did it almost constantly...thats because your anxiety is at a very high level..Once you can find something to take your mind off of it, the time spent feeling breathless will decrese, almost go away. Mind is there when i drive really long distances, i dont know why but I try to block it out and once i get there and get busy watching a live band or visiting with friends, it passes now. It'll be okay!

Breathing properly is important, you have to consciously breathe in to the count of 5, & then breathe out to the count of 5, for hours, & drink water too.

I know how frustrating it can be.  I've been plagued with breathing problems for weeks now.  It feels like someone is pushing on my lungs; I feel like my lungs are too tired to function properly.  Sometimes it lessens.  Other times it's worse, and I also have chest pain.  I also have periods of time when I have no real issue, but then something seems to trigger my anxiety and I'll have anxiety episodes for weeks.

I find that listening to soothing music can help quell some of my anxiety, and thus, also lessen some of the breathing problems I get.  Maybe you could try that.

A side note to those responses about breathing exercises... I've tried breathing exercises in an attempt to lessen my own problems, but it always seems to make it even more difficult to breathe.  I think I get anxious about doing the exercises properly, so it has the opposite effect to what should be achieved.

Breathing is easy and hard at the same time, it's fact that most people breathe incorrectly because they don't fully inhale and exhale.  Shallow breaths deprive the brain of the needed oxygen to function normally and also revitalize your body.  Practice correct breathing everyday by lying down on a comfortable surface with the palm of your hand on your stomach.  Now when you inhale push the air out with your stomach and when your exhale make sure your stomach is rising and not your chest (incorrect way).  When breathing in count to 4 seconds and hold your breath in for 2 to 3 seconds then exhale to the count of 4 seconds.  Do this everyday for 15 minutes and you will eventually start breathing better.  When my anxiety was at it's peak i noticed i used to take shallow breaths.  Now i am 10 times better than i was so i know you can do it.

I agree with the other posts on here...try to in any way get your mind off of it. I have a big problem with this. I constantly feel like I can't breathe and unfortunantly I give it strength with my thoughts. One of the things I'm gunna try to work on is focusing on having fun, different things I'm engaged in, because I've realized that I'm actually AFRAID of what I'm doing and this fear controls my anxiety. Hope that helps :)

Yeah I agree....When my anxiety with that was so bad, i'd get horrible pains in my chest and shoulders. Told the doctor that and he said I wasn't breathing right because of the anxiety, i was breathing with my chest and shoulders, tried the stomach breathing...1000X's better!!!
