Muscle spasm in BOTH calves?
« on: August 05, 2010, 05:10:46 PM »
Arghh, I was sound asleep last night only to be woken by crazy muscle spasms in not one calf, but BOTH??? It was so bizarre. I must have been REALLY tired too because I kind of forgot about it happening until I woke up and let out a good few profanities. Man it hurts so much... my right leg is still tight and sore but the left seems fine now.

Obviously if it were one leg I'd be fine, easy enough I know it's nothing serious.. but both legs is what's making me anxious right now. Does this seem like cause for concern? With all the burning in my legs and feet and tingling I've been having this big spasm is making the anxiety worse.

My mom said to go to the doctor but I don't think it's serious enough for that. Then she tells me that her friend gets this after she drinks (I did have a couple beers last night) and she also has diabetes. Now I am relapsing into these diabetes fears... irrational thoughts obviously thinking because all this happens to her then I must have diabetes as well, we're sharing the same symptom after all  ::) I am trying so hard to forget about my diabetes fears as the blood tests must have come back normal.. I hope my other symptoms go away soon because they are what's keeping me in this anxious state.

Any thoughts? I don't want to go to my doctor. I was worried it could be MS but I seen a Neurologist in November and had an MRI, she did the whole Neuro test on me as well.. I don't think things could have changed so fast overnight but who knows...

Thanks for reading

May be just muscular. It does not sound like diabetes. If it persists, maybe you should call the doctor to at least
make you feel better.

I've only had it happen to me once in my life so far when both calves did that to me. I don't think it is linked to diabetes or anything like that. I noticed when I do get mine it is out of a sound sleep and I usually end up on the floor in pain. I don't know if my body is stretching and it pops or what is the cause. The only remedy that I found is to sit on your butt with your legs straight out and pull your toes toward you. It seems to relax the muscle that is tensing up. It still has residual pain but that squeezing horrible pain is relieved. It usually takes about a day for the soreness to get out of my system.

Try taking magnesium supplements. If the problem persists, you may see a doctor, but most likely it's just a random muscle spasm (I have these, too, on occasion) or due to a lack of magnesium.

i seen my doc about this a while ago its happened a few times and he said that it's one of two things anxiety or the beginings of arthritis in your sacrolic joints but he said most likely anxiety. then asked if i'm a pacer  when i'm anxious and yes i am and he told me pacing during a panic attack is like hiking up a big hill over and over because your working the muscle with lots of adrenalin pumping.
hope that eases your mind a little. however i don't know your medical history so if it continues to be a problem a doctors visit wouldn't hurt.

I had a whole post on this a couple weeks back.  For me, it was calves, thighs (front and back), arms and back going into painful spasms.  It's still happening with twitching and utter fatigue and weakness too.  I just had a diabetes test recently and I was absolutely normal.

Other people on here have had this happen and worried about other diseases but it really is anxiety.  :)
