Nitrous Oxide Question
« on: August 05, 2010, 09:29:48 AM »
I have a serious vomiting phobia.  So anything that causes gagging or nausea triggers a full-blown panic attack.  I have a dentist appointment today and to avoid gagging the dentist wants to give me nitrous oxide, which I've never had before.  I have read that nitrous' most common side effect is nausea and vomiting.  Yet a lot of people LOVE getting "gassed" at the dentist.  So my question is, have you had nitrous at the dentist and did you feel nauseous and or vomit?  Thanks.

Emetophobia (fear of vomiting) puts me between a rock and a hard place because I will do ANYTHING to avoid even the POSSIBILITY of even FEELING sick, yet I'm equally terrified to take anything, even if it's something that will help, for fear that it too will make me sick because, let's face it, EVERYTHING can cause nausea.  :(

I've had it as well as several of my kids.  It is wonderful.  It definitely relaxes you and will make the appointment very comfy.  I've never felt nauseous or vomitted.  My kids have not either.  I did feel out of it for a bit though afterward.  You may want to sit and relax in the waiting room unitl your head clears.

The gas is the exact reason I have not gotten my wisdom teeth pulled yet. I'm so afraid to get the gas! My friend said it feels much your flying (high) I am not excited! I am so terrified of vomiting especially during that procedure. When you say you feel a bit out of it, can you explain?

Like you had a couple of drinks--your head is not clear.  That is the gas doing that.  It is what relaxes you.  Did I feel like I was flying high?  No, but I certainly didn't care what the dentist was doing.  I was much more interested thinking about the planets---hahaha.   After the procedure the dentist will turn off the nitrous and give you oxygen to help clear out the nitrous faster.  However you may still feel wobbly and unclear for a few minutes.  Likely if you are having wisdom teeth removed you will want someone else to drive you home.  Also you don't HAVE to have gas to have your wisdom teeth removed.  Even if you get gas, you would still get the novacaine to numb you up.  The gas doesn't remove pain, it just relaxes you and makes the appointment easier for you AND the dentist.

Sixpack I forgot to thank you for responding to this post. You really did clear a lot up for me. I think I will actually go for the gas. The whole planets thing sounds like something I could really use! Haha. Thank you for easing my mind on that! Finally an answer from someone with some sanity! :)
