Fish Oil Pills
« on: February 10, 2007, 07:08:42 AM »
ANy guggestion on dosage?  I noticed my mom thought to get some becuase of something it will help her with also and I had mentioned that supposedly it can help for anxiety or depression possibly so I would want some.  Although it really sucks that every time I think I am finding something natural that is good, it never pushes me forward "enough".  I mean I know none of it will 100% cure me like something magical.  But I wish I could get good enough to make it where at the very LEAST I never almost stay in bed all day and don't eat.  I need to somehow live my life and be happier than this.  I am taking vitamin B complex, a multi vitamin, trying to change my thinking, etc... and I am just HOPING that the fish oil pills do SOMEHTING that will benefit me.  Possibly the aloe vera juice too for my stomach, but I only tried that once and it tasted so acidy, I thought it may make my actual acid worse.  And trust me my stomach problems DEFINITELY play a part in my depression and anxiety.  I can't STAND stomach issues and if I could get rid of that, it sure would help.  It is probably caused by my anxiety to begin with, I am sure.

I tried them about a year ago, they made my anxiety skyrocket.  But if we know anything around here, it's that everyone reacts differently to everything.  I can only offer my own experience with it.

Plus don't accidentally bite down on it.  Excuse me while I go chastise myself for reminding me of that lovely event.

Fish oil pills  made you feel worse?  Can you tell the quantity you did?

They're supposed to be very good for the brain and to depression...  :(

If I understood the wikipedia article it's 1,1 grams for women and 1,6 for men.
You can't cut it in halves, so either 1 or 2 grams a day. More than 2 grams a day is not recommended.

Please post experiences and further info you have in the Alternatives to Medication thread on Medication And Therapy Topic.

(more on this in wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega_3)

ok.  so far I am not sure.  I ahve been taking them for a few days.  Yesterday was my best day in ages, but today has eben terrible.  So it's kind of hard to tell since most likely other things were the reasoning behind my moods.

I started taking it a week ago and I've been feeling miserable, but I think that for different reasons. Fish oil and B vitamin seems like a good idea in theory, but it would be good to know if it can make things worse.

I took 500mg a day of fish oil and had the worst anxiety I've had to date, excepting the first anxiety event I had.

It was pretty bad, yes.

Fish oil or basically omega 3 will NOT increase your anxiety.

Eating sources from the  see will not increase your anxiety.

What you could be is allergic.

The recommended dosage for omega 3 products is between 2-3 grams per day with 1-2 grams being EPA the rest DHA. There is not a lot of research on anxiety and omega 3 fatty acids but the research does look promising and so far the scientists are saying that the EPA is ''probably'' a more determining factor.

Also, product quality is a serious concern. I know of only 3 products that have scientific research to back their claims and that also tells you the product has what is printed on the label.

Carlsonlabs.com is probably the oldest and most researched.

Nordicnaturals.com

http://www.doctormurray.com/

I use the Dr.Murray formula because it has what I am looking for, 1500mg EPA and 750mg DHA in ONE teaspoon. Which lasts me 50 days for around 28USD$ .

The liquid formulas are always less expensive and they are all flavored now so taste the taste is fine.

I always buy from http://www.luckyvitamin.com/068958035741.html because searching through froogle.com I find they have the best price (if you look at shipping costs as well, they have a great price). I purchase all my natural products from them, their service, fast delivery and best prices are just too good. Their only setback is they do not have paypal.

Oh and I just started taking this product today (was taking another omega3 product  before but I have done my homework and only buy if research can attest I get what is stated on the label and the quality is proven).

Hi Blashy,

Thanks for the info.
Sometimes I wonder why do governments spend so little money doing research with disorders that are estimated to become one of the main disability reasons in a few years. There's something wrong in their heads.

That`s because Govt rarely funds studies, the pharmaceutical industry finances all major research.

They have ZERO interest in natural products or foods (fish oil is food) because they can not patent it and thus can not have monopoly.

Letting private enterprise be in health care or the food industry is the dumbest thing ever conceived in capitalism. Health and Food should NEVER be for profit.

True. It's ridiculous how things are run.  Just like the whole deal where doctors give out all of these prescriptions based on which companies do things for them or give them stuff.  They would rather people end up unhappy or dead than to get less profit.

Personally, there are lots of things I blame the doctors for, not really listening, prescribing medication that is clearly not working, don't warning about side effects, telling me to keep taking medication after I told them about side effects (some of them very bad), etc.

But thing is self-medication is dangerous, and not seeing a psychiatrist when the illness gets so bad as most of us have experienced isn't any good either. Just like medication, one must search until finding the one that works. Next time I'll visit mine I'll take the antidepressant list and ask her why am I still on zoloft (after trying most ssri's) if there are others I didn't try yet. Isn't 3 months enough for a trial? I'll have to ask the dr on that again.

I would think 3 months is a long enough trial period if you are still experiencing bad side effects after all that time then maybe you can establish the med isnt working for you.  Have you thought about trying any of the benzos?  From what you have said maybe ssri's are just not for you.

Good luck with the doc  hope he listens to you this time :fragend005:

Benzos usually make no difference or even worse, but thanks for the suggestion.
I still have some alternatives in the antidepressant medication (wrote a list, a long one, to check that), but it seems that if I want to try them I'll have to do that on my own, I can't insist on medication changes anymore, whatever I say to doctors I always have that same stupid prescription with either ssri's and benzos. And I thought  had made myself clear. They don't take my word that it makes me feel even more depressed. "Give it some time to work".
I'm so tired of them and their smart ideas.
