Silly thinking about being anxious about getting to sleep
« on: July 17, 2010, 11:26:53 PM »
Has anyone out there ever got into a vicious circle of being anxious about getting to sleep, and therefore not sleeping, and then getting even more anxious about it, and losing even more sleep?
The reason I ask is that I know it is a stupid way of thinking (I know positive thinking is much better), yet I still do it, and it is highly frustrating!
Can I always expect this silly thinking to turn up every now and then?

Hello, I seem to be going through that right now. 2 days ago I went to bed around 11pm,
woke up 2 hours later, stayed awake for about an hour, fell back asleep for another
2 hours, stayed awake for awhile, fell asleep for an hour then was was awake for the
rest of the night. Last night went to bed around 11 pm, slept for about 45 minutes
and was awake for the rest of the night. Now I am wondering what tonight will bring.  B-;

I seem to be always afraid of my anxious thoughts keeping me awake all night. If I lay in bed for more than a half hour and still awake I sometimes start the 'what if' thinking, like what if I stay up all night and struggle at work the next day, what if I have forgotten how to sleep, etc..anxiety brings all these worst case senarios into my mind. Thankfully I sleep alright most nights, but I hate those restless nights of being up until 2 or 3 in the morning.

You hit the nail on the head Mr BBB! That is exactly what happens to me MOST nights. I worry that if i don't get enough sleep my performance at work the next day will suffer, and I periodically check the clock, which makes me worry even more because I am seeing how late it is. It's such a vicious cycle!
