If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.

there are 4 main types of drugs that i know of that treat anxiety. if your depression is caused by your anxiety, you typically treat the foremost and the latter will go away when the anxiety decreases. the fatigue is part and parcel of both anxiety and depression, so that will go away when you treat them. exercise, a good diet and stress relief through journaling, meditation and yoga is essential too.

SSRI's are the long acting drugs that work on serotonin. prozax, zoloft, paxil, luvox, lexapro, etc. these take a few weeks to kick in, and can help even out your anxiety and depression.

benzo's are short acting anxiety relievers- xanax, valium, ativan, klonopin. they help ward off panic attacks, but CAN cause dependency if you don't deal with the root of anxiety. they are often perscribed with an SSRI, as SSRI's are notorious for increasing anxiety when you start them. sometimes they are used alone, but not typically with someone who has depression.

AAPs, or atypical antipsychotics (i prefer to call them neuroleptics b/c the name is horrifying to me) are sometimes perscribed as an adjunct to SSRI's as well, to help take care of obsessions that maybe the SSRI's don't help with completely. in small doses they help with anxiety. this is seroquel, risperdal, abilify, zyprexa, etc. they also can act as mood stabilizers for those who need them.

antihistamines are also used to help with anxiety too believe it or not. benedryl is used by some people, which is not that great b/c there is potential for abuse as well. vistaril is another example, but that is perscription. these are not fantastic ways to treat anxiety, but they are still used.

then there is random buspar- i don't know what it is, and i don't know how it works. and it works for some people and not for others. some people can take just that, and find it takes the edge off, whereas others have it added to their SSRI to control panic.

WHEW. i think that's it! clearly, i've done my due diligence on google... ::)
