Intrusive thoughts
« on: April 21, 2010, 01:16:29 PM »
I have read on here time and time again, that if you let the thoughts come in and don't give them any attention, they will go away....

Can someone please tell me how this is possible? When I am experiencing intrusive thoughts, I am shaking and in complete TERROR! Almost to the point of calling 911 and having myself committed! What are the tips to get through this?

BREATHE. let them come and watch them like a bystander.

try to replace them with a funny image (really hard but it helps, i promise).

meditation.

focus on something else- clean the floors. read a book. watch tv. water the flowers.

Destract yourself. Do a crossword puzzle while listening to music.
Tell the thoughts to stop. Just think, or say out loud, stop.

Kristen, I had this same feeling yesterday. I was so scared by the thoughts that I was sure they would really come true. I was driving to my Therapist thinking, im just going to tell her I should be locked up. But I didnt. Because she asked me to describe to her how these thoughts were more real that other intrusive thoughts that I have had before, and I couldnt. All I could describe was yet another intrusive thought. This gave me some peace. I know that there will be a time that they seem real again, but maybe I will try to write down all of the qualities of why it is/isnt an intrusive thought. It may help. Hell, anything will when you feel like that right? Hang in there and message me anytime if you want to chat. We are in the same boat here :hugs:

On another note, 'intrusive thoughts' can be a sign of depression.  If you think this is possible, or you cannot get a handle on them please consider a therapist!!

Thank you everyone for your replies.
I do think it could possibly be depression. I don't know how you could have all of these scary thoughts and not be depressed somewhat. I have started therapy. My second session is tomorrow. She has yet to diagnose me or give me any tools in dealing with all of this, but I guess it takes time.
