Can Anxiety/Stress make you go blind?
« on: April 18, 2010, 10:12:12 AM »
In the morning my eyes were closed and i was trying to go back to sleep when i got a weird fuzzy/blurry sharp pattern in my left eyes(whilst my eyes were closed). I got scared, is this normal with anxiety. Can anxiety/stress make you lose your vision or go blind?. I get worried.

Hi,

Vison can be impacted by anxiety. You  might want to go back and look at a recent post by ***** which listed tons of visual symptoms.

What happened when your eyes were open?

Unfortunately no, since none of us here are doctors.  HOWEVER, it sounds like it could have been an ocular migraine.  Sometimes people get headaches where fuzzy patterns dance across their eyes.  Sometimes there isn't even pain.  If it only lasted a second I'm sure you are fine.

If you aren't reassured, however, it's good to talk to your doctor.

When I am anxious, I get a very odd sensation when my eyes are closed. It's very hard to describe but it's almost like my whole eye "bubbles" or washes over with bubbly water or something along with white flashes.  It only happens when I'm overly anxious and when my eyes are closed. Now that my anxiety is way down, the flashes/bubble sensation is gone.  I have been to the eye docs and nothing is wrong with my eyes.  So, yes, eye weirdness is an anxiety symptom.

Anxiety can cause visual disturbances but I have never heard of it causing blindness.

When I'm anxious my eyes go crazy, and the more anxious I am the worse it is. But when I'm completely calm then my eyes are usually fine. Chances are it's anxiety. I really really don't think anxiety can make you go blind though.

My vision is absolutely wonky when I am anxious. I am not sure if anxiety can make you go blind- I've never heard of that happening, but I have felt like I'd go blind before because of anxiety related eye symptoms.

If anxiety could make people go blind, then there would be no one in this forum because we all would be.  :angel-smiley-006:

I remember reading about hysterical blindness in my abnormal psychology course in college.  Although very rare, I believe there have been cases in history where people with no physical problem have gone blind purely due to psychological reasons. Of course, these individuals are not really blind, but perceive themselves as blind.  Other people have been known to lose their voices due to purely psychological reasons.
These days if a person went suddenly blind they would go to an eye doctor who would find no reason for the blindness and send them off for a psychology consult where the emotional issues would be treated.
