can multiple anxiety symptoms have sudden onset
« on: March 15, 2010, 01:49:14 PM »
I got a group of symptoms fairl suddenly (paresthesia, some headaches, dizziness, and a little twitchy type stuff). I had a similar onset about ten years ago. I know this is probably somewhat indcative of MS, but I wonder if anxiety symtoms sometimes come this way also.

I have gone down the MS/ALS route several times in the past. It isn't fun.

Twitching, paresthesia, even cramping, can be the result of severe anxiety. I had this bout with major muscle twitching right before my second child was born. I was also under a lot of stress at the time--months later, it went away.

But I do have a theory on what causes the nasty twitching: it is an autoimmune response, usually from 2 things

1. Stress
2. An underlying common infection, such as a low-level sinus infection.

Basically, the immune system goes into red alert, and the body is in a kind of "fight or flight" mode.

What to do about it?

Three things seem to work for me (and many others)

1. Drink lots of water and drinks that rehydrate (such as Pedialyte or some generic version).
2. Intensive exercise
3. Stress management

Try this for a week and see if there is imporvement--I bet there will be

I've had all of that, just from anxiety. I was 100% sure that I had a neurological condition several years back, and after 6 trips to various doctors (yes, that's right, 6), PLUS an MRI, I finally let it go. Now, when I'm anxious (like right now), I just accept the twitchies. I also go numb and get the tingles. For instance, I know that it's scary, but I think it just goes with the territory.

YES.  You can bring on anxiety symptoms by simply thinking about them too.  And sometimes anxiety symptoms come about by over worked, worn out nerves.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.
