AD's increasing your anxiety?
« on: March 15, 2010, 08:44:51 AM »
anyone else here found that AD's increased their anxiety and made their symptoms worse? if so, which ones helped and which ones hurt?

i tried zoloft 50 mg and wanted to jump out of my skin. funny how different drugs affect people- i was taking it at night and it was causing insomnia- thus my anxiety was horrible due to the lack of sleep. add to it it was the first AD i had ever been on, and i was a wreck about taking it.

switched to luvox- was taking such a low dose i was basically putting myself through withdrawal symptoms everyday because of the short half life.

now just taking xanax at night to sleep and half of one during the day if i have to.

has anyone else experienced this?

Yes, most of these A/D's have a start side effect. If you started at 50mg of Zoloft, I can see why you jumped out of your skin! I started at 25mg and had the same terrible effect. Some of these A/D's cause an energy increase (for people who are depressed) while others have a more sedating effect. Doctors don't get that starting people with high anxiety at the medicinal dosage often times creates extreme anxiety, thus, we discontinue it before giving it a chance to work. Tirading up is the best method. I started Paxil at 5mg. I stayed at that dose for a week. I then tried to go to 10mg. My anxiety shot up! I dropped back to 5mg for another week then went to 7.5mg. I did this slow taper up to where I am now, 30mg.

Ask you doctor or even better (in my opinion) a pharmacist on which AD'S cause the least increased anxiety at start up. Remeron is another sedating anti-depressant that helps with depression, sleep and anxiety.

Celexa gave me horrific anxiety.  I took 10mg a day for 2-3 weeks before I had to give it up; I couldn't stand it any longer.
