TRYING TO GET OFF ZANAX TAPPERING NOT GOING SO WELL

I had hep c over 6 years ago i went on interferon for a full year, man what a year that was. praying every single night ...that with the meds cured the hec ,I  have tested negative 5 plus years in a row. Thank God now I'm left with a dependence to sleep aids , i used codine for a year and a dozen other conventional sleep meds they all worked for a few months , than about 3 years ago my doc perscribed 1/2 mg zanax (alpaprozam) it was fantastic  11:00 every night out like a lite.  I was so happy but  i had to up the dose after a year 1 mg than up to 1 1/2 , i have been doing fine on 1 1/2 for almost 2 years  if i had a real stress full day i would take 2 pills.  2 mgs . but basically  1  1/2 is as big a dose . i told my doctor i didn't want to have a dependence on drugs. i would like to taper off, some young kid for a doctor,  he said your on such a low dose theres no problem stopping , 7 days without zanax  i was in tears i hadn't slept in almost a week . I drive a tractor trailer for a living 24 plus years. i could of killed myself or other people i was so pissed he told me i could stop cold turkey ,,,I  called and he perscribed trazadone , so i took it that night  it stopped my breathing.. i couldn't believe it i almost went to er that night , i was pissed i called the doctors the next day and this idiot called in 30 1/2 mg zanax when he knew i was on at least 1 1/2 per night to sleep,, so I'm trying to tapper myself i went down to 1 mg about a week ago  on my 4th day i thought i had it made and than last night 3 am i finally took another 1/4 2 hours of starring at the ceiling at 5 am i took another 1/2 so i ended up altogether taking  1 3/4 , so its not going good but the doctors were (no ) help at all , if any one has any advise please let me know I'm going to try 1 1/4 tonight  God i hope it works , i don't fell drugged up during the day I'm not a danger driving i just don't want to need a drug to sleep  I'm tired of it i work my butt off 7 days a week 8-12 hours a day i should be able to sleep with no problem please advise if you have a good way to get off this crap i wish i never would of started thanks

i really fear dependance and withdrawal....because xanax is really saving my life/sanity

im currently on the same dose, 0.5 -2 mg a day and honestly its the only thing thats keeping me from tearing out my hair...
i try and skip a day sometimes, but that usually doesnt go too well...the "crazy thoughts" come on full swings and my GAD kicks me in the 0104 like a mad horse..

if i leave the house without my xanax...i dont care how far Ive gotten, i'll turn back to get it.
