Dentist Appt Wed and need some advice
« on: March 06, 2010, 04:35:38 PM »
Ok, I have already put this appt off once and am going to make myself go Wed.  What I am wondering is how other people have coped with being in the dental chair, tilted all the way back with nothing to look at or do?  I can make myself go but then my mind starts thinking all these bad thoughts and I get really anxious.  So, I am asking for advice about how to make myself be calmer during a 30 min procedure that requires no numbing.  I am just getting my veneer cemented and the temp taken off.  Thanks for any help.

God Bless.

well just remember , you aren't locked in that chair. Its not like you are going to be strapped into the gas chamber or nothing. Ask tigerpuss, he always has good ideas.  :action-smiley-065:

Ok, thanks.  I am unsure how to get ahold of Tigerpuss, but if I can find him I will ask him.

Good idea.  I am going to do that for sure.  I am actually not nervous right now at all.  In fact I am ready to get it over with so I don't have to think about it anymore.
Thanks for the advice everyone.  I appreciate it.

I was terrified to go to the dentist... I put it off for a few years and I ended up needing 2 root canals. I went to a sleep dentist and then took care of that. My dentist is real good at checking up on me he understands my anxiety. I find the more I go the more I trust him. I still get out of the chair soaked in sweat though.

-I also usually sneak a xanax before I go

I was just there yesterday and I find it helpful just to be upfront with the doctor.. I tell him I have bad anxiety (very common he says) and we agree on a hand signal to let him know if I need a break.. knowing that I have an escape clause helps and I never end up using it.. I just repeat to myself "soften around your sensations.. be a sack of potatoes (make your body as limp as possible) and it helps. Usually by the time I am in the chair the worst is over.. I am there and getting it over with so I relax in that thought too.
He also has flat screens in the room with whatever show I pick on it so that helps too.
Good luck!
