Dentist Appt Today
« on: March 04, 2010, 02:11:53 PM »
Just needing some "calming down" words of encouragement.  I have an appt today at 2:30.  It is now 1:09 and I am thinking about cancelling the appt.  I broke a crown a couple weeks ago and HAD to go get it redone and was able to make it through that with anxiety and all because I had to.  But today, they are just taking off the temporary crown and replacing it with the perm crown.  No shots or anything, but the thought of having to sit in that chair again is making me crazy.  I have been doing great and I do great until I have to go to the Dentist, Dr, etc.  So, any help right now will be WONDERFUL!  Thanks Guys!

Oh so you've done all the hard work and now it is time for the pretty new top for your tooth.  It is a piece of cake.  It won't take long. However I think the cement stuff they use smells icky.

Don't let this stop you.  If you cancel the appointment, it will only teach you to fear it more.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

Funny you should mention this.
I have my 3rd of 3 appointments for a root canal on Monday.

Sounds like typical anticipatory anxiety.
We make things so much worse than they actually are.
Classic "what if" thinking.

You've done it before and you CAN do it again.
Just visualize walking out of the dentist's office after it's all done.
Can you picture it?
Imagine how you will feel.

Now.....make it happen.
Let us know how well you did.

I've just had 2 root canals and had 6 dentist appts since 2 months ago and
it all felt good. They numbed my mouth up so good that I didn't feel anything. Plus
when I'd get nervous sitting in there waiting , they'd let me get up and go to the bathroom..

No stress my friend. These guys are trained professionals an know about dential anxiety all too well...

Why is it that going to the dentist office makes you want to go to the bathroom?

I should Google That one...... :laugh3:

Ok, so I did the bad thing and put if off until next Wed.  I know it is not the right thing to do, but just could not make myself do it today.   :angry-smiley-044:

I know that I should NEVER give into the anticipation fear thing, but today I just did not want to go in there and get those feelings all over again.  I have not had any anxiety symptoms in over a week and just the thought of the weird stomach, heart racing, band around my head, backache etc was overwhelming me.

Hopefully by next week I can get over my fear or at least be able to handle it better.  I do promise to not reschedule it though.  I will go to this appt and like Drew said...Imagine myself walking out of there smiling!

Thanks everyone...I knew I could count on you all!  God Bless!!!

tigerpause~

Because a lot of times if a person feels confined to a chair they need an escape route, and the bathroom is the best place for that. I know when I get nervous too, I feel the constant need to urinate.

abaggett,

Ok by you postponing your appt. takes you back a step in the wrong direction. (as you pointed out in your response)
When you postpone something you did it to create "comfort" for yourself. This is not a good thing even though you felt better initially after making the call to the dentist office saying you'd like to come in next wednesday.

If you can begin to create "comfort" by staying in these appointments , that would be ideal.

I used to absolutely DREAD getting blood drawn from my arm but then it came time when I had to get it done to find out if I had cancer. My stomach was in knotts, dizzy, felt like postponing it but I stayed in the "discomfort" until the blood was drawn.

The next week I had to go in again to get some more blood drawn, which gave me discomfort again but not quite as bad as the first time...  Made it through...

So then each month after that I went in to get some blood work done. I'd even make something up to the Dr. just so that I could get the blood work done...  Now, doesn't bother me one bit.

Jason...I know.  I wish today that I would of just done it and gotten it over with, instead I have been thinking about it all day.  Now, I get to dread the appt for the whole weekend until WED.  So, I will not make this mistake again.  Believe me.
Like I said in the earlier email...I just wanted the comfort at that moment and did not think about how I would feel the rest of the time.
Anyone reading this...if you have an appt...KEEP IT.  Otherwise you end up just thinking about it all the time until it rolls around again.

God Bless.

I definitely have no concerns about going to the dentist but on other things. Like my filling fell out of tooth about 2 months ago and I did not do anything about it. I know BAD MISTAKE. Some more broke off last night. omg i think i might have to have a root canal on my tooth because i did not get it taken care off. It is bad!!!! I am mainly worried about the financial part of it.
