Please share your outrageous fears
« on: February 19, 2010, 09:00:44 AM »
For me, one of the best weapons against anxiety is laughter. If I can laugh at my fears then they lose a lot of their power.
I thought it would be fun to hear everyone's outrageous fears or worries that their anxiety has produced at one time or another.
So if you feel like it, please share!
Here are just a few of mine that I actually believed at one time or another, if only for a few seconds, to be possible..

1. If my bulldogge starts following me around or trying to be close to me in a quick and obvious way, she must be able to sense that I am about to have a stroke or a seizure.

2. What if I go to the dentist and the Novocain will have a weird reaction with my body and will cause my whole body to go numb.. or at least my whole throat and I will swallow my tongue.

3. I fell down the icy stairs and thought my wrist was broken and freaked out.. not b/c of pain or anything reasonable.. I thought, what if a small piece of my broken bone fell off and got into my blood stream and will travel to my heart/brain/lungs and kill me.

4. If I am around different people in line at the store for too long then I fear that I will then become like them myself.. not people I know, like I am next to someone in line at Target who has a weird/bad hairstyle.. I fear that I will start to intensely want the same hairstyle and will eventually get the same hairstyle. Same applies to clothes or mannerisms.. bad jeans, ugly sweatshirts etc, undesirable mannerisms..

5. Not a fear, but this was a strong compulsion for me after my daughter was born in 06. Lucky me, every now and again it comes back too.
No matter who I was talking to, I would get a strong urge to make out with them.. imagine what it would be like to kiss them or lick their lips.. seriously.. cute guy at the grocery store, the 65 year old mailman, or the lady at the bank who pretty much had a mustache .. didn’t matter.

Actually, the first one reminds me of a fear of mine.  Have you ever read about the cats or dogs that go up to a sick person and lay by them because they know that person is dying?!?!  Who in their right mind would want one of those animals near them?!?!   B-;  I wouldn't pass by one of them for a million dollars.  :sprachlos020:

I wouldn't want one of those animals by me either.  :sprachlos020:
I was watching a show about dogs who can smell cancer and sense seizures. My poor dog.. if she suddenly wants to be near me or won't leave me alone the first thing I think is "Oh crap.. here we go.. " when in actuality she probably just has to go out or something.  :laugh3:

Thanks Nervebag..I am glad you liked them.
& thanks to you too Drew..  :happy0151:

The funny part is.. now if we ever have some big AnxietyZone convention or if for some reason you come to Chicago and we bump into each other the first thing you will be thinking is.. "Oh I bet she is imagining licking my lips right now.."  :laugh3:

Nancy,

I'll join you.

I have had a similiar fear in the dentist office. After receiving novacain for a root canal I thought that I was swallowing the tooth particles that he was drilling and that somehow it was going to poisen me.

Also, I have waited in line at the bank and there would be a police officer in line ahead of me. I would get this overwhelming urge to grab his gun. The urge was so real I would have to step back from myself and ask "Am I really doing this".

Lastly, I have had that same kissing thing before. It comes and it goes.
If there is ever a convention they may have to seperate us. :happy0151:

Love the topic!

emma_lou.. I am happy it helped. Hope your day gets even better still.

I new I would run into to you again Bank Lady!!!  :laugh3:
She was in Ohio and we are in Chicago now... really.. I will never forget her face... and the weird random spacing of the dark whiskers on her upper lip.. poor thing.

Oh Drew! I am so happy I am not the only one with weird dentist issues.

I also sometimes get weird thoughts around authority figures! I have had an urge to grab a police officers handcuffs before. Similarly, I have had it happen where I am at a store and an employee comes around me I get compulsions to shoplift.. I am convinced that I am acting guilty just from my compulsions and then I think "great, now they are going to see me all nervous and actually think I am shoplifting". I am convinced that when I leave the store the security beepers will go off even though I haven't taken anything. So silly.

You might be right about the convention.  :happy0151:

the dog issue is to funny because i thought the exact same thing when my dog came to lay in my room, turns out he was just looking for crumbs.

my first visit with my therapist was a hard one because my head was so tight, she told me that she wanted me to know who she was so she talked about herself for over an hour, all i could thing of and of course i said this in my head, for the entire hour was, ''bla, bla, , o please let me out of here..
i had to laugh afterwards but it was so torterous.

you all are so funny, and the ''kissing thing, thats fummy to because i to have thought strange things like that, they just pop in my head.....although they pop in even when my anxiety is under control

I guess I am not the only one who thinks my dog has suddenly become a medical alert dog. :)
The therapist thing would have totally annoyed me.. I mean I understand wanting to give you her credentials.. but an hour.. really?  ::)

lol, great therapist  ::)

I was at a kiddies party yest and they had some music on. I had a thought, "omg what if I start to dance!" i imagined myself suddenly dancing like a breakdancer and thought what would happen if i started dirty dancing next to this little girls dad.  I swear it felt so odd cause i could feel my muscles twitching and I felt like it was just going to happen.  Then of course, I would have a bloody muscle twitch in my bum and i thought omg im gonna start doing it

sat down firmly, and then had an hysterical giggling fit  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

The pet one is proving to be more common than I thought!  ;D

Thanks for sharing.. the water one is good. I think it just proves the point that people who suffer with anxiety really are too kind. They care too much.  :happy0151:

I'm so glad this topic didn't die after it was moved...it cheers me up!  I loved the dancing fear!  ;D
I thought of two fears I have that involve guilt...but I'm not guilty!!
  The first one is when I am next to a police car.  I feel like they are staring at me.  I am worried I look guilty of something and they will pull me over and rummage through my car and embarrass me to death when other cars pass by.  B-;
My other fear is that undercover people in the stores will think I am shoplifting!!!  I definitely AM NOT, but I feel like they think I am.  When I have to look in my pocketbook for my glasses, I hope that they don't think I'm sneaking something in there.  I usually go into the big aisles when I do that where it is open and not a hidden area.  ::)  God, I'm nuts.

I have a serious fear that perfectly working garage doors are going to come slamming down at any moment. My kids know to stay at least 5 feet away from garage doors when going in and out of the car into someone's house. Otherwise I really lose it - I start screaming at them and acting nutty, like they're in immident danger.
I also have the fear of authority figures thing. I am very uncomfortable around police, and sense that it makes me suspicious to them. I had a bad experience with a couple "high & mighty" cops who gave me and my brother the run-around at customs, coming back home from visiting family in Canada. They actually said to us: "Unfortunately we have to allow you to pass because you are US citizens."... They threatened to take my brothers car, our wallets, our money, etc. We didn't have anything illegal on us or anything. Just trying to pass through. I guess they were bored and wanted to have a laugh. Ever since then, I've had  anxiety and trust issues with cops. I'm feel they are determined to find an excuse to arrest me.
I'm deathly afraid of bees, but I guess that one's pretty common

The one about cops makes sense to me.
The garage door thing is interesting.. I have had that thought before but it did not resonate with me... like, yea, that woud be bad.. but I did not actually become afraid of it.. I did not ever think it would actually happen. Yet for a long time I firmly believes all the bulk candy at the grocery store had been laced with something.

This thread is awesome!

I have a fear that cashiers will think my ID is fake when trying to buy alcohol. I always think they are going to look at me and think , "Why does she look so nervous? This ID MUST be fake!". So weird, im about to be 23 and this just started.

Or when I take my birth control, I ALWAYS think that somehow it slipped out of my mouth and back into my water bottle and dissolved in there. So I always have to inspect my water after taking it.

There are many more, just have to think of them  :happy0151:
