birth control
« on: February 13, 2010, 11:37:48 AM »
her we go again,
I started a new birth control last month, and about half way through I started to spot and the spotting continued until my next period,I went to my doctor and she said it was probably a combination of it being my first time on birth control and that fact that I was taking antibiotics because of getting my wisdom teeth removed.
The spotting stopped after my last period but it starting again, about mid way through the cycle.
the pack says spotting is common especially in the first three months and my doctor did not seem concerned and said if it happens next month, I might consider switching pills.

I had a pelvic exam and a pap smear about a month ago, and I had a ct scan of my abdomen, all we completely normal, as is my blood work, and again my age is on my side, I am 21.

I still am scared it's something really bad thats causing the bleeding, has anyone had this before?

Should I give my birth control another month to work itself out or should I see my doctor this month?

She and the package said it can take up to three months for my body to get used to the birth control, I am on my second month of break through bleeding, and it's enough somedays that it's really really annoying and requires a panty liner.

What should I do?

Break through bleeding is normal when starting a new birth control.  Antibiotics also alter the effectiveness of birth control.  My pharmacist always tells me that when I get an antibiotic filled.  I wouldn't worry about the bleeding too much.  If your exam came out normal, than it is probably nothing serious.  However, if it really bothers you, you could talk to your doctor about trying another pill.  Birth Control is trial and error.  What works for one person, may not work for somebody else.  You may need to try more than 1 pill before you find the one that works for you.

yeah, I was just wondering if I should wait the full three months that it normally can mess up your cycle or if I should see my doctor now.

Wait the 3 months.  You already saw your doctor.  She is telling you what is causing it.  If you continue to spot after 3 months, go back and get a different BC pill.

Just for kicks and giggles, let me tell you that I am 30 and I spot sometime in the middle of my cycle every mothh.  Sometimes, I spot more than I don't spot.  This has gone on for 2 years and I have had every test under the sun.  The end result:  hormones!  I do it without BCPs and I am still not dying of something sinister in my female organs.  If hormones casuses it for people not on BCPs, then the hormones can easily cause it for people who ARE on BCPs.  :)
