College resources for the mentally ill?
« on: January 11, 2010, 08:15:20 PM »
I have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorder, and suspect I am also codependant. I made it through school because I was homeschooled through eigth grade and in high school my mom helped me do all my schedualing and homework because these things make me very overwhelmed and unable to function. I have recently graduated and I know my mom can't help me through college. My question is, are there any resources for the mentally ill to help them through college,or should I consider alternatives to college? Also, what is there for me to do with my life career-wise since I am mentally ill?

I am very scared and I can't function this much independently. I'm starting to feel like all I can do is be a housewife, but then again, I wonder who will ever marry me if that's all I can do? Please let me know what I can do.

Many colleges have a student health center and they usually have some sort of therapist on staff.  I would start there.  A therapist will help you learn ways to deal with your depression and anxiety, without it controlling your life.  When you go to college you will have an advisor who will help you with your classes and scheduling.  Many people who have anxiety and depression lead normal lives.  I have anxiety and I am a teacher.  I want to wish you good luck in your journey and don't let your anxiety and depression steer you away from what you want to do.
