'Talking' on the internet
« on: December 18, 2005, 10:52:37 PM »
I've always wanted to be more talkative, but recently I've been trying harder (or, at least I think.) Normally I never post or PM people on the internet, but because I've decided to try harder, I've posted more.

My question is this: does talking on the internet help with SAD? Does it help with initiative or does it not help at all because there are no people that you talk to face-to-face?

Hi Kitty,
how are you doing?
I feel that talking on the internet can be beneficial to you. Even thought it's not face to face, it still helps to improve your language and social skills.
Any form of communication is better than none. Just imagine if you never spoke a word to anyone for the next twenty years, how much do you think your commonucation skills would have diminished?
Start with the posts and as you gain confidence try a few pms or emails. Look at it this way, what have you got to lose. I'll try to log in every fay to see how you are doing. Take care. :) :) :)

Thanks^_^
I'm okay, still very busy during Christmas Break.
I just realized Instant-Messaging can also help with automatic response. Anyway, this makes a lot of sense, although there are some things that can only be found by talking to other people (eye-contact, body language, and... what else?)
I've never had problems talking to my friends or family on the computer.

Hi Kitty.I am new on this board and I can relate to your situation . I can manage my job pretty well but when it comes to social events i just can't do it. hopefully we can find some answers here. My daughter is getting married in April and already i am having fears about making a speech. I f i can could get away with writing my speech down and handing it out to the guests my problem would be solved (i wish).

I wish you well and if you find any helpfull hints or sites please feel free to reply

^_^Congratulations to your daughter!
Now, speeches. I know exactly how that feels. Maybe if you stood with and gave the speech with a significant other that might help? What helped me feel less anxious was agree that whatever happened, happened, and also learning that my fears of what would happen really wouldn't matter if they did happen (like everybody laughing, no harm would come to me and soon it would be forgotton.)
         Sincerely,

Internet related chat does help a little bit, but, try talking to someone on microphone instead of typing.
Cause i have no problem typing with anyone, i dont feel even a little anxious, but when it comes to microphone, its like meeting person head to head.I also belive, once you solve it with talking on microphone with ppl, a lot of rl fears will also leave.
I know thats what i am gonna do, and report here about results.

The anonymity of 0276 is liberating and beneficial for the confidence when it comes to communicating but at the same time impeding. Make sure to advance after passing an element, when you start to feel to safe, I guess.
But for me, since I had a disorder/s, the internet could never helped me as it was never about confidence, I think. Seeking help did.
