OMG - Red and White blood cells in urine
« on: December 01, 2009, 01:50:39 PM »
I posted earlier that I had a whole list of blood tests done and most of them (except for Lyme disease) came back fine but they saw white and red blood cells in urine.
I am completely freaking out. Doctor wants me to come back and do a repeat test, i am just so scared that it's something horrible and now i'll have to go through all the kidney/urinary tests.
What could this mean? He mentioned the UTI but i don't have any symptoms of that. He also mentioned the contaminated sample but that sounds too simple of course.

Did anybody have the same issue? Any response is so much appreciated, i am losing it and just can't cope with all of this anymore. Please help!!!!!!!

My daughter had that happen.  It just wasn't a clean catch.  We did a repeat and all was well.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

I had something similiar as well, they just had me come in and retest and all was fine. they had me take antibiotics for a possible UTI in the meantime, but I had no symptoms of one.

The last time I had a urine test done, according to my Doctor "I had a ton of WBC in the sample." scared me silly, but she didn't seem concerned and just put me on bactrim because I'm very prone to getting UTI'S, sometimes I don't even show symptoms. It's fine.

I also have had blood in my urine. They did a catheter to catch the urine directly from my bladder, so it was "clean," and still came up with a trace amount of red and white blood cells not visible to the naked eye. I was freaked out, too. The doctors ran some other tests all of which came out normal. And it was decided that my body naturally outputs a little bit of blood in the urine. Not a big deal. And this happened 15 years ago. So if they were somehow wrong about that, something would have happened by now.

Thanks everybody who responded. Nellie, what kinds of other tests did they do? I am so scared it's the beginning of the long horrible process for me.. i so regret ever going to the doctor and i don't understand why he would do the urine test i guess because i was complaining about bleeding gums so he was covering all the bases..

I am so scared right now.. i posted on another HA board and the nurse there responded in this really dry medical way and listed cancer as one of the possible reasons for this.. sometimes medical professionals really make me wonder.. from what i've ovserved, they are the least caring people i've ever seen.. i am not sure all of them are like that but many..

my period started today so i can't even get another test done until it's done.. it just feels like my torture will never be over..

urine tests are standard tests.  My daughter's annual bloodwork always includes a pee in the cup test.

Thanks sixpack.. does anybody know if the sample contamination could cause this type of finding? or is it just the white cells that indicate the infection? what is the significance of having both types of cells? i think i am even more scared with red blood cells being there...

i am just so scared right now and that nurse didn't help me at all..
