off to the dentist tomorrow to start facing my fears
« on: November 24, 2009, 06:32:38 PM »
Does anyone have dentist anxiety?  I get myself so worked up that I'm ready to throw up by the time I get there but I know the only way to deal with my present issue is to start there.

I'm not afraid of getting dental work but I used to be terrified of catching HIV from dental equipment.  It still creeps into my mind but I do the best I can.  I think you are brave for facing your fears, I'll be thinking good thoughts for you :)

Thanks hypo, I'll be alright by this time tomorrow night ...when it's over.  The older I get, the more I hate going to the doctor but I go every 6 months for bloodwork because I'm at the beginning stages of type 2 diabetes and have high cholesteral so I'm on meds for both.  I have a wonderful doctor who is very in tune to my HA and is a very kind man...(God bless him..he puts up with me!lol)

I've always had a fear of dental work/dentists. I just dread getting a toothache because I know what's to come. I think I've gotten better over the years though. And, I have a really nice dentist, which helps. I've always survived my dental appointments, regardless of how much fear I had going in. Way to be brave and face your fears! I'm sure it will go well.  :sign0111:

I'm not letting him do too much tomorrow, I want to enjoy thanksgiving dinner.  I figure I'll just go get his game plan for me.  When I have any kind of dental work, I can't eat and enjoy.  I love how my symptoms seem to surface around the holiday season!  I wish someone would invent a drill that was silient and didn't make that noise that I can't stand.

That's actually a good idea about just having him check things out tomorrow and figuring out the game plan. And, I know exactly what you mean about the drill. ugh! Have you ever had that slow moving drill that makes your brain feel like it is vibrating??? I hate that one! But, I survive and even my jiggled brain comes out okay. Hey, maybe a little more jiggling would help get rid of some of my crazy thoughts!

Let us know how it goes. Try to stay calm. I'm sure it will be fine.

First off, if it's the sound of the drill, wear headphones.  One of my good friends is a dentist, and in his rooms, he has tvs on the wall, with headphones the patient can listen to either that or their own music.

Dentistry still seems so in the dark ages.   I just had a botched root canal surgically removed, it was not pleasant.  But as with almost any medical/dental/auto/anything important in life:  Catch things quick, and usually the damage is far easier to contain.  Repeat that mantra on the way to the dentist, the whole drive, remember what you are doing is saving yourself from worse repercussions by being diligent....

Feel better.

I don't fear the dentist/or dental work.  Dentistry has come a very long way in making all of it much more comfortable.

I just don't like how some dentists are like used car salesmen!!!

Just take it easy and see what is what in your mouth.  You don't have to do anything at this visit.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

Happy to say I lived through the dentist visit.  I have an absess tooth which is the last tooth on the lower left side in the back, he said that is why my glands are swollen on that side and I'm have throat and ear pain, he said it looks like it's been absess for a while and was suprised that I wasn't in that much pain.  So next week is the big extraction, they can't save it with a root canal, it has to come out.  He gave me antibiotics and some percocet, I don't know if I'll take the percocet, advil has been working well.

Good for you! You are much braver than I!

wow and yuck and whew all rolled into one.  Guess a tooth can cause throat issues, eh?  :winking0008:

Thanks, I'm not brave at all!  I took a xanax before I went there just so I wouldn't act like a blithering idiot.  Anyways, I'm glad I know what it is now because I can't stand not knowing, I was never good at waiting anything out.  It doesn't hurt that much and I'll be able to enjoy turkey dinner tomorrow.
