will my DR still prescribe me klonopin for rare situations?
« on: November 08, 2009, 09:37:33 AM »
From last october until the spring I needed klonopin daily for my anxiety as it was so intense. I have since been able to get along without it-- unless its a certain situation.

I'm relaxed because I KNOW I have the option just in case. It's like a safety net. When I feel anxiety rising I just remind myself to don't worry because if I need it I have it... and that alone relaxes me.

I have 3 weddings coming up in the spring and I will need more by then as the use-by date on the bottle is over before then.
Will my doctor still prescribe some to me? I don't know that I will take it but I know that I would like that safety net.
When I saw my therapist she said that some people feel better knowing they have medication with them and just always have some prescribed even if they don't take it. So she said yes.
But I'd like to know that this is for sure as its on my mind. Would a doctor really prescribe it for this reason? Have they for you?
They do for people when they take plane rides... so they will probably do it for me, right? But I would need more than just for those 3 events... but not much, just so I know its there and I have enough.

Because I know I'm not at the stage where I can go on without having my safety net even though I have barely needed to take it in recent months.

Isn't the use-by-date usually a year from the day you get the Rx?  I haven't looked it up, but I wonder when and if Klonopin 'spoils'.

Will my doctor still prescribe some to me? I don't know that I will take it but I know that I would like that safety net.

If you bring your near expired Rx to the appointment to demonstrate how responsible you are, I'd estimate a very high probability of a refill.

When I saw my therapist she said that some people feel better knowing they have medication with them and just always have some prescribed even if they don't take it. So she said yes.

I agree.

But I'd like to know that this is for sure as its on my mind. Would a doctor really prescribe it for this reason? Have they for you?

Not for me, but situational anxiety is (debatably) what benzos are most appropriate for (vs. long-term use).

They do for people when they take plane rides... so they will probably do it for me, right?

Exactly and yes.

Yes, most doctors are benzo averse but don't have any problems prescribing small quantities for occasional use. I even had a psychiatrist who specialized in PD prescribe me xanax exactly the way you describe (as a safety net.) I ended up needing them more often but I vary my use depending on how I feel. I would think a psychiatrist willing to prescribe it daily would have no problem prescribing it for occasional use.

The expiration date on medication (I believe) is the date the medication still has 90% of its strength. But it's only a guess and if you store it properly (dark, dry, moderate temps) it should work fine for at least 3-4 years.
