Have to go on BP meds and huge anxiety now
« on: October 30, 2009, 05:25:09 PM »
I went in for BP recheck today and BP was still around 150/90. The nurse did it, so I didn't see the Dr.

I come home and there is a message on my machine from the office that the Dr wanted me to start on Hydrochlorothiazide(sp), low dose 1 X a day. I guess it is a diuretic.

I would love to say this is stress doing this, but my numbers have been like this for about three years or more. Just, my other Dr did not seem to really care.

I am already on 4 medications, and this will make 5. And I am only going to be 42. I cannot take this.

Anyone know anything about this med? I only know it is a diuretic and I am hoping I do not spend my life in the bathroom. Pass out, etc...

I took it.  All you are going to notice that you pee A LOT until your body gets used to it.  It will not make you feel any different at all.  I actually liked being on it.   This is like the mildest HBP pill there is.  Belive me, you have nothing to worry about!

Can't really help you specifically med-wise.  I take Diovan, and it works like a charm lowering my BP. But it gives me headaches, and makes me have to pee about once an hour, which is ridiculous for me.

It is currently my 4th med, and I really hate taking it, but hey, HBP is something that is far better to get in check now, than deal with the consequences later.  Look into alternative ways to get off BP meds.  I know many people who do it though diet and exercise, but I just tend to be far too lazy and tired to comprehend that, haha.

Hope you feel better...

I really hope this med works. Now my fear, is that it won't and get put on something stronger and have to deal with side effects for the rest of my life(there goes my mind again, racing ahead). All my family has high BP, and all diagnosed in their 40's like me. And I feel as if I have this "chronic condition" now. I am the person "living" with High BP.

I am not very diligent about diet and exercise, but I have to be somehow.

I don't know how long it takes for a BP medicine to work? Is it the same day? My BP has been all over the board today, from 137/86 to high of 168/96. That is a HUGE difference.

I honestly have no idea how fast mine worked.  All I know is by my next doctor's appt, my BP fell RIGHT into normal range again.

Oh and don't be so hard on yourself.  I'm not even 30 yet and I'm on 4 meds.  Well, have to get an infected botched root canal surgically removed, so I'm on 5 if you add the cillin I'm on to fight off infection.  BP is affected by hereditary, physical, and mental aspects.

Your first line in the quote I shaved from your post, is VERY important.  Easier said than done though, as my aerobic and cardio fitness is completely in the dumps.  But I am fully aware that I could proactively help my BP by working on that.  I know quite a few people who got themselves off of BP meds by taking proper care of themselves.

But honestly keep in mind, whenever you freak out, your BP is going to rise.  Whenever you start breathing shallowly or quickly, your BP is going to rise.  When you stand up, you BP is going to rise.  BP seems like such a stagnant # when you get checked, but if you were constantly being checked while you carried out your daily activities, you'd see huge swells and dips, afaik.

Hope it works, and hope you feel better....
