I'm not sure if I have PTSD, but I can share this with you
« on: October 14, 2009, 01:17:08 PM »
I endured a lot of child abuse from my grandma's husband - mental, emotional, physical, then after my grandma died he tried to come on to me with sexy words, no touching though. I ran away from home and haven't been back.
I am extremely sensitive to adults' negative emotions, and when I sense that an adult is angry (even if s/he is not angry at me), I want to cry.  If an adult has an issue with me, or is angry at me, I go into suicidal ideation.
Though I am 27 years old, I still feel like I'm at the mercy of giants.
What's going on here?  How can I stop this?

Hi Sentinel,

I can only imagine what you have been through is extremely hard and what you're facing is equally difficult.  I wanted to link you to the Mayo Clinic website:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/post-traumatic-stress-disorder/DS00246/DSECTION%3Dsymptoms

They have an extensive list of resources that might be helpful to you.  PTSD can emerge from any traumatic event at any point.  It sounds like what you went through, besides being damaging, was also very traumatic.  The coming on to you could have brought back those feelings of helplessness, terror etc.  Having said this, it is possible you have a form of PTSD coupled with anxiety etc.

I would say talk to a professional (psychiatrist or psychologist). That's really the only way you can get a proper diagnosis.  Further, it isn't a good thing to suffer in silence or alone.  I know it's hard but sometimes things are beyond our means to deal with or control, that's when we need to talk someone who is/has professional experience.  It's through their experience that we can start to move forward with our lives.
