Should I or shouldn't I
« on: September 15, 2009, 09:34:54 AM »
I am the director of a small charity with low confidence and anxiety issues.

I have worked here in difference capacities for seven years, but the charity has to change or finish this month due to lack of funding.

I have been asked to carry on alone delivering careers advice and everyone else gets made redundant.

I have a qualification to do this, but am lacking in some of the information that you give out to clients, which bothers me.

My issues are, lack of confidence, frightened of failure (big time) and the anxiety that I am sufferering from, due to the current situation at work.

I know it is my decision, but could I please have your thoughts.

Thank you.

Further to the above.

In my heart I do not want to do it.  Is this enough?

With charity work, if you no longer have a passion for it, it is more than likely only a matter of time before you get burned out.

Fear of failure and lack of confidence are natural considering the situation.  GAD amplifies those fears, but most people would feel them to some degree.
If you have a passion to do this, I would suggest you consider giving it a try.  I've learned that I anticipate things as being worse than what they really turn out to be.  You may be doing the same thing.  You may find that you can do it, and do it well.

However, you said in your heart you don't want to do it.  If that's true, and it's feasible for you financially, it's best to be honest with yourself and turn it down.  Without desire and passion, charity work has limited rewards, and burnout is almost always the end result.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

Thank you for your comments.

I made my decision late this afternoon and I have decided to go and seek other opportunities. To carry on in my current state of mind would be too much.

Onwards and upwards (hopefully).

Hi there

I have a hugh fear of failure as well and its something I live with every day

What I do realise though is that I have to face it and let it happen

and lets be honest We are trying to have the cake and not the fat
You can't have sucess with out failure so be prepared to fail on a grand scale
go for it if your heart is in it !!
