guilt about doing nothing
« on: September 12, 2009, 05:44:22 PM »
I have a hard time sitting still or even taking a nap because I get a terrible feeling that I should be doing something because time is short.  It is a painful and sad feeling but I can't figure out what I am thinking to make myself feel this way.  It really makes me scared to be alone and not busy because it will come to me and it hurts.

I"ve had that feeling too.  The worst was 12yrs ago when I was in deep anxiety doo.  It is a very strange odd feeling but it is a part of anxiety.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

You're being way too hard on yourself.  You sound like a very accomplished person with a good work ethic.  I am the same way.  It's great in the sense of being motivated and productive, but there's a limit to this.  A "law of diminishing returns", if you will.  Not taking the time to relax yourself, or knowing how to, contributes to problem anxiety.

Yes, time is short for all of us.  All the more reason to spend some of it doing whatever the heck we feel like, whatever we enjoy.

Relaxation is not a luxury, it's a necessity.  Enjoy :)
