feel so down
« on: October 23, 2006, 02:08:18 PM »
I have suffered with depression and I also have GAD with hypochondria thrown in!!  I have been on and off various meds over the years and I am currently coping without them.  Basically my life feels worthless at the moment.. It takes me all my time to get out of bed and face the day.  I have four children and only carry on for them.  I am also doing a degree in Psychology so I have all the information about my illnesses to hand and I still cant motivate myself. I wouldn't say I feel suicidal I just feel numb and a real sense of nothingness.  I just can't see the point in any of it.  I persistently worry about getting a serious disease and about awful things happening to my children, it consumes me to the point I can't bear it.  No matter what I have tried to do to deal with things I can't move forward it just doesn't take much for me to be right back down there.  Although this site really helps I can't seem to put some of the advice to use. I just wanted to vent my feelings well done to all those who feeling good today :mad0228: :sign0067:

I hear you sweety, bit depressed myself as I'm havin a hard time with new diagnosis bipolar and new meds are hard to handle right now.

Did the meds help you before?  Think you may need to try agian?  I kept going off mine cause I could do it on my own for a while then back at it.

Hope you feel better soon.  :sad0126:

Thanks for all the advice guys, I don't want to go back on meds but I know I can't rule it out either so I will see how things go.
GMan 86 it depends which area of psychology the person wishes to work in on whether there are jobs available.  Almost anybody will employ a graduate with a 2:1 degree in psychology in any business or teaching field.  I dont know if your British but in Britain at the moment the only area of Psychology which is difficult to access is the Clinical Area which is due to the fact there arent enough mentors to train new Clinical psychologists.  Its a great subject and covers many diverse areas, but as you will see from my post applying the theories to your own personality is difficult ironically.

I live in America and the reason I said that was because my own psychologist told me that. Actually, I wanted to get into the psychology field and she told me no, there are no jobs. And the jobs that there are pay very little. Psychiatry is where the money is at, she says.

We are taught at university all the time that America is leading the way in psychology some of the newest research is pioneered in the USA.  Psychologists earn a good wage in the UK.  Psychiatrists in this counrty are required to study for 7 years at med school.  Clinical psychologists need  3 year degree and a 3 year doctorate specialising in clinical psychology.  I am assuming you would want to work in the therapy field if you studied psychology its a shame you dont live in Britain there are not enough of them and I cannot access any through the National Health Service because of lack of funding, I wouldn't let your psycholoogists opinion put you off studying the subject it will open up a whole new set of experiences for you.  Just to add I don't know how old you are but I am what we call a "mature student" I am 32 and am in my third year of study sometimes I think its the desire to achieve my goal at university what stops me from just giving in to the anxiety and depression,  good luck and do what you really want.

Thanks for the advice 'gloomy'. I just turned 20 and I am into my 1st year of college. I really love psychology. I find it extremely interesting. We'll see what I want to do after I take my liberal arts courses.

Is college the same as our further education where you can gain qualifications to get into university? Or are you already at university?  What is liberal arts is it a creative or academic subject?  My brother is reading for an art degree and that incorporates mainly his own creative art projects but he also studies the academic historical approaches to the arts which include the psychodynamic discipline or Freud as most people know it who was the founding father of psychology.  Anyway you are are practising psychology every time you go on these forums and reply to people like me so you already have a good insight into human behaviour!! Sorry for going on so much but I love posting on these forums especially when its on a more positive note and thanks for your advice aswell, take care

I am currently attending a 2 year, or junior college, and than I will transfer to a university. Liberal arts is classes that you have to take in order to graduate, than I can take my major classes.

If only I had made myself get a job after I got my degree, maybe I would be better off now.  *sigh*  But guess there is no point thinking about the past.

It's always good to go to school, so keep it up, to whoever are still going.
