New to the site, hope someone can help me out.
« on: November 03, 2005, 01:45:46 PM »
I'm 21 years old right now and started to notice sad around my junior year of high school.  It doesn't really affect my social life too severely.  I still have no problem going out and doing normal daily activities.  Those types of situations make me uncomfortable but something I can handle.

SAD does however affect my work.  I have a severe fear of speaking infront of groups, big or small.  I have all the symptoms that people have listed of racing heartbeat, shakes, sweats, and confusion.  I've waited so long but now this disorder seems to be hindering me at work.  For example, it is near impossible for me to read just a few short paragraphs in front of a group of people without me showing signs of this disorder.  This affects the way I present myself at work.

My question is what steps should I take.  I want to see a doctor if necessary.  I really dont like the idea of therapy.  As much as I don't like therapy I hate the idea of medication more because I hate taking chemicals and thinking of long term effects.

Like us all I would like to get help that works, but the more i read it sounds like people try several methods and struggle to find help right of way.  Even if there were an over-the-counter drug I could try to calm my nerves.

If anyone has any advice it is much appreciated.

Grabowski,
I am new here as well. I am 23 years old. I also have sad. You sound like you have the beggining - since you do not like taking medication a psychologist would probably be better for you to get some help. My sad is a little different. I experience all of your symptoms plus more. I too am searching for help but am looking for a psychiatrist. I belive that some meds should help me out. In my condition- I cannot go out of the house where large crowds are (show, mall, grocery store, etc..) without having an attack. I have a hard time speaking to people (including my family at times) using eye to eye contact is tremendously hard for me as well. I hope you find the help you are searching for- until then I wouldn't mind chatting here about those good days and bad.

Seek therapy you will be glad once you do so. Trust me, my anxiety started out as a small thing and blew up over my high school years. Hope all goes well!

I agree with Jane.  Psychologist are much more better than Psychs.  I also found that from other members that Psychologist and CBT are the best non medication treatment that can help.   My SAD started also when I was 21, I am now 24.  Seek a psychologist and tell him/her how you feel.  I think this is the first step; admitting you have a problem.  :angel-smiley-002:

God Bless.
