Derealization...and moments of "Realization"
« on: July 27, 2009, 11:20:53 AM »
Anyone who suffers from DP/DR...I struggle with this all day, everyday.  However, it seems lately I get the occasional moment of relief where everything seems to make sense.  Although it is breif, it is so refreshing, like out of the water for a breath of fresh air.

Does any get this feeling?  Does anyone remember getting this feeling while recovering?  I have been through DP/DR before when I was younger, but I don't recall the actually sensations.  Perhaps, they were too traumatic and I erased them from memory.

Hm, I don't know if it is the same thing, but last year, during my episodes of DP/DR, I would sometimes just give in to the feeling, inviting derealization into my head, and when I stopped struggling against it, I had what felt like moments of intense enlightenment.  Sounds a little different than what you're describing, but I would indeed describe it as "out of water for a breath of fresh air."

until today I there is times where the derealization kicks in and kind of bugs me, but I have learned that if you have fun while its disturbing you the most you will most likely learn to ignore it and everything will seem just as real.

Thanks for your replies,

Enlightenment is a great word for it.
I believe we are speaking of similar feelings.

Has anyone read "Feeling Unreal" by Daphne Simeon?

I just ordered it, and wondering if it helped anyone.

Thanks,

DP and racing thoughts don't go good with each other and it drives me crazy B-;  I'm going through some bad anxiety now and DP is weird as heck!

I know how hard it is when these moments arise, but you just got to go with it.

Apparently its part of our nervous systems way of trying to cool down an overloaded brain!

Try not to buy into it to much.

tmicrowave made me laugh out loud with "...like meditation and other crap like that", as I wasn't expecting it from what had been written before

I know exactly what you mean.  That occasional momemt of relief is you stepping away from your mind's control for a brief span of time.  When I'm in a period of generalized anxiety, I'll have that feeling of relief just as I wake up in the morning.  My mind has been shutdown for ~8 hrs. and I'm relaxed.  As I get up, I'll notice the wheels start turning in my head and anxiety fills back in.  All the symptoms, feelings, start spinning my negative thoughts around everything, etc.  One thing that helps me is to know it's possible to have that relaxed state all the time.  It's hard work when you're predisposed to being a nervous anxious person like myself.  But IT IS POSSIBLE!  It gets easier as you go about the process.  You just have to stay aware of where your thoughts are going.  Live in the moment.

Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy.
