Tight throat/lump on the throat and ER
« on: July 22, 2009, 10:03:21 PM »
So today I end up in the ER because I was so concern with my lump on the throat feeling.
When I got to the hospital they checked my vitals and everything came back normal. When the doctor came in to the room he ask me what was wrong. I told him that I had a lump on my throat so he started checking and and didn't find any lumps or swollen areas. I thought he checked too fast and ask him to try again. He told me to show him where the lump was and I point it out to what I though was the lump. It end up being a bone in the collar bone. He ask me to open my mouth again and said Ah. I though he said Aha and almost Sh$%# in my pants. I thought he found something  He told me that he could not find anything unusually and that he was going to have my throat swabbed  to check for infections and that he was going to have a specialist look at my throat which kind of freaked me out.  He also check for any ear infections and didn't find anything.
I just hope that this is just my Anxiety acting up. I guess they jsut have to follow up since I told him that I still felt the lump in my throat.

I'm pretty sure that its your anxiety acting up, but still get it checked just to make sure.

I'm so sorry you're so worried about this :( I'm sure it will all come out fine. It sounds to me that your doc saw how nervous you are about your throat and he's over-checking on purpose to make sure he proves to you that everything is fine. It could just be me tho....

Hi Abeja,

I guess the Doctor notice I wasn't too convince and he decided to do the swab thing and send me to the throat specialist. I feel allot more calm today. I also thought it might it been a swollen lump or something but I guess it wasn't , thank God.

Hey DonPablo,

I think I can remember ten posts about the lump in the throat feeling from other members in the last few days alone! I am sorry that it got you so upset that you felt you had to go to ER. It sounds like the doctor was incredibly thorough and is sending you to a throat doctor purely to put your mind at ease. If were any objective lumps, he would very easily have felt them. The fact that you thought part of your collarbone was a lump shows to me, at least, that you are checking yourself to find something that fits your personal diagnosis.

Throat lumps can be due to GERD, anxiety, and often, both. In the former case, it's due to inflammation of the larynx, etc. due to excess stomach acid, and in the latter, it is due to unconscious tightening of the throat muscles similar to when someone is about to cry. I agree that it can be incredibly frustrating, but what I really suggest to you is to browse the forums or use the search function to search for "tight throat" or "throat lump", etc. You will see that it is very common amongst us and some very helpful replies have been made to past posts.
